Harry Potter movie franchise concluded back in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. The Fantastic Beasts spin-off series started in 2016 and its third movie is set to come out next year. There’s even a TV show set in Harry Potter world in development for HBOMax.
But even with all that, fans are missing the original trio – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. Harry Potter film series released eight movies between 2001 and 2011 and with $7.7 billion at the global box-office it is the third most successful movie franchise in history.
Now, 20 years since the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, director of the first two Harry Potter movies said he would love to film the ninth film – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – based on the stage play of the same name that serves as the sequel to Deathly Hallows. Considering that Cursed Child is set 20 years after the events of Deathly Hallows, the original cast would now be at the right age to return, and that would certainly make fans go nuts, in a good way.
In a new interview with Variety, Columbus said:
“I would love to direct ‘The Cursed Child.’ It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine.”
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a two-part play that premiered in July 2016, and the script was made into a book that fans could’ve bought in stores or in digital formats. Broadway production won six awards at the 2018 Tony Awards, including Best Play.
