Chris Hemsworth Hints at Surprising Future for Thor After ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Chris Hemsworth has dropped some exciting news about Thor and what’s coming next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During a recent appearance on the Smartless Podcast, the actor revealed that after Avengers: Doomsday, he will continue playing Thor a few more times. “Yeah, it’s wild,” Hemsworth said, hinting that Marvel already has plans for the character.
He also talked about conversations with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. “I was talking to Kevin Feige about it, and he said it’s cool because the audience now expects dramatic turns with the character,” Hemsworth said. “Whatever we do next—we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be [different].”
The tone for Thor is changing after years of comedy-heavy films. Thor: Ragnarok gave the character a fresh reboot, turning him from a serious prince into a humorous, cosmic hero. Thor: Love and Thunder took the humor even further, which some fans felt went too far. Hemsworth admitted he played a part in pushing the character into silliness.
Now, Avengers: Doomsday is showing a darker, more serious Thor. The teaser hints at a grounded and intense version of the hero, and Hemsworth confirmed that on The View. “Yeah, you get a taste from [the teaser]. That is a different tone than, I guess, what Love and Thunder was,” he said.
Hemsworth also reflected on the freedom he has had to change Thor over the years. “And what I loved about my time in the MCU, I was able to, every couple of films, change the tone of the character. And some people, they find it a bit disruptive, but for my own artistic journey and adventure, it’s been a great blessing to be able to do that,” he added.
In Avengers: Doomsday, Thor appears to be carrying a heavier emotional load. “This film, you see from the trailer, he’s asking for help from his father upstairs. And there’s a lot of pressure, and I can’t say much at all. Every word I’m saying, that’s one too many. The other end of the phone call saying, ‘Stop, stop, stop,’” Hemsworth teased. The story seems to focus on Thor protecting his daughter while the Multiverse faces major threats, raising the stakes for the God of Thunder.
Fans who wanted a break from the slapstick tone of Love and Thunder may find this more serious Thor exactly what the character needs. Balancing power, pain, and humor has always been Thor’s strongest combination. With the Russos directing Doomsday, Thor could return as a layered hero who carries both his past experiences and new responsibilities.
This tonal shift is a smart move. Thor has always been at his best when there’s real risk and emotion behind his actions. Seeing him take on a darker, more serious story could make this the most interesting version of the character yet. Do you think this new Thor will hit the mark?
