Chris Pratt opened up about how he and his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger prepared for marriage by attending premarital counseling before their 2019 wedding. The Guardians of the Galaxy star shared details during a recent episode of his Literally! With Rob Lowe podcast.

“A part of getting married at St. Monica [Catholic] Church is doing premarital counseling,” Pratt said. “We did like six sessions with this guy who was, by the way, the best thing in the world.”

Pratt explained that the sessions helped the couple plan ahead and avoid potential conflicts. “If you’re somebody who’s thinking of getting married, you should definitely follow this,” he added. “They ask you questions you would not even think to answer until you’ve been married for eight years and then something comes up, and you’re like, ‘What do you mean? That’s what you think about that?’ And then you have to negotiate it then. Like re-negotiating every landmine. It was really great.”

He said the counseling led them to create a “list of directives” for their partnership and wedding, covering things big and small. One example involved holiday traditions: “One of them was that we were gonna play Christmas music on Nov. 1, and that we were gonna take the Christmas tree down Dec. 26. We talked about it beforehand. So now we’re on board,” Pratt shared. By agreeing in advance, the couple avoided arguments during their first married Christmas.

Pratt emphasized the importance of communication and compromise: “If you agree on it, you move on. But if there are things you disagree on, you hash it out, and you do the work to figure out where the other person is coming from.”

His cohost, Rob Lowe, who has been married to Sheryl Beroff since 1991, agreed that counseling sounded like “a great idea.”

Pratt was previously married to actress Anna Faris from 2009 to 2018, and they share a 13-year-old son, Jack. He and Schwarzenegger have three children together: 5-year-old daughter Lyla, 3-year-old daughter Eloise, and 1-year-old son Ford.

It’s refreshing to see a celebrity couple openly talk about taking steps to strengthen their marriage. Planning ahead and having honest conversations before tying the knot seems like a smart way to avoid unnecessary conflict. What do you think about premarital counseling, worth it, or overkill?
