Christopher Nolan Refused To Compromise On The Odyssey’s Brutal R Rating

Christopher Nolan’s next film is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of the summer, and much of that buzz traces back to what he did after ‘Oppenheimer’ won him his first Best Director Oscar. That film proved audiences would show up for a serious, R-rated epic, and Nolan appears to have taken that lesson directly into his adaptation of Homer’s ‘Odyssey’. The upcoming historical epic follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, on his long journey home after the Trojan War.

Most of Nolan’s filmography, including his Dark Knight trilogy and ‘Dunkirk’, has stuck to PG-13, so the confirmation that ‘The Odyssey’ would carry a surprise R rating from the MPA caught plenty of fans off guard. It marks only the first time in 24 years that a Nolan film has been rated R for violence, with the previous instance being 2002’s ‘Insomnia’. In fact, ‘The Odyssey’ is just the fourth R-rated feature in his entire career, following ‘Memento’, ‘Insomnia’, and ‘Oppenheimer’.

As Geek Vibes Nation highlighted on social media, Nolan made his intentions clear from the very start of production. Citing Empire Magazine, the post shared Nolan’s own explanation for why he pushed for the harder rating, quoting him as saying the goal was to make the most intense version of the story possible, and that with the weapons of that era being swords, bows, and arrows, the violence naturally reads as more brutal on screen.

Nolan reportedly walked into his first conversation with Universal with zero room for negotiation, making clear the film needed an R rating or there would be no deal at all. With a reported budget of $250 million, ‘The Odyssey’ now ranks as perhaps the most expensive R-rated movie ever made, surpassing both ‘Joker Folie à Deux’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. That kind of price tag makes the rating a genuine gamble for Universal, since studios typically prefer PG-13 for their biggest summer tentpoles.

Nolan has some precedent on his side though, since ‘Oppenheimer’ also carried an R rating and still grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide. The cast lineup for ‘The Odyssey’ is stacked as well, featuring Damon alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Lupita Nyong’o, and Samantha Morton. Tom Holland is playing Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, rounding out a family dynamic at the heart of the sprawling adventure.

The MPA officially cited violence and some language for the rating, and early trailers have already teased what that means, including a Laestrygonian battle sequence where one of Odysseus’ companions is hurled through a tree. The Cyclops sequences are also expected to rank among the most viscerally intense moments Nolan has ever put on screen.

Demand for the film is already massive, with IMAX 70mm tickets selling out quickly after going on sale a full year in advance. ‘The Odyssey’ arrives in theaters on July 17, giving fans just a couple more weeks before they can see exactly how far Nolan was willing to push the brutality of Homer’s story.
