Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Has Officially Surpassed ‘Barbie’ at the Global Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s box office history has always been closely tied to Warner Bros., the studio that backed nearly every one of his defining hits from ‘The Dark Knight’ trilogy through 2023’s ‘Oppenheimer.’ Even that film’s massive $976 million worldwide haul and Best Picture win came up short against one specific number that has loomed over Nolan’s career ever since.

That number belongs to ‘Barbie,’ Greta Gerwig’s 2023 cultural phenomenon that became the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros.’ entire history, finishing its theatrical run with $1.447 billion worldwide. During the “Barbenheimer” summer that saw both films open the same weekend, ‘Oppenheimer’ captured plenty of cultural buzz but never came close to matching ‘Barbie’s’ commercial dominance.

That comparison has finally flipped. ‘The Odyssey,’ Nolan’s latest epic, has now surpassed ‘Barbie’s’ global box office total, achieving something ‘Oppenheimer’ was never able to accomplish. According to Box Office Mojo data reported by ComingSoon, ‘The Odyssey’ crossed the threshold after a month in theaters, pulling in $1.446 billion globally against ‘Barbie’s’ final tally of $1.447 billion, a gap of less than $1 million that the film cleared within a day or two of that report.

The symbolism here runs deep given Nolan’s own history with the “Barbenheimer” moment. Watching his follow-up finally overtake the film that outperformed his own 2023 release adds a layer of narrative closure to a rivalry that’s been part of the pop culture conversation for years.

‘The Odyssey’ has been racking up milestones well beyond this one. The film has already become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history, surpassing 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ and has also become Nolan’s own biggest hit, beating both ‘The Dark Knight’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ domestically and worldwide. According to Deadline, the film has also crossed $1 billion overall, becoming just the 65th movie ever to reach that milestone.

That run has continued even while sharing the marketplace with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ one of the biggest box office stories of the year in its own right. Combined, the two films have generated more than $2.1 billion globally, a figure poised to eventually surpass the $2.4 billion combined haul of 2023’s original Barbenheimer pairing.

Critically, ‘The Odyssey’ has performed just as strongly as it has commercially, holding a Certified Fresh 94 percent score from critics and a Verified Hot 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. With domestic earnings around $539 million and international receipts topping $907 million, the film has become Universal’s marquee release of the year, all while the studio continues watching demand for premium formats like IMAX remain unusually strong months into its run.

With China’s box office debut for the film only arriving in mid-August, ‘The Odyssey’ still has room to climb even higher before its theatrical run winds down. For Nolan, a filmmaker who’s spent decades building some of the most acclaimed and successful films in modern Hollywood, finally clearing the one number that eluded him in 2023 marks a genuinely significant milestone in an already historic career.
