Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Just Pulled off a Box Office Streak Nothing Else Has Matched in Decades

Blockbuster movies almost always follow the same predictable arc: a massive opening weekend followed by a steep, inevitable decline as audiences move on to whatever comes next. That pattern has defined theatrical releases for so long that it’s practically taken for granted, which makes what Christopher Nolan’s latest epic has managed to pull off all the more remarkable.

“The Odyssey” opened back on July 17 with a massive $123.5 million domestic debut, immediately establishing itself as one of the year’s biggest releases despite a nearly three-hour runtime and an R rating that typically limits a film’s broader commercial ceiling. Two months later, that opening weekend energy still hasn’t faded in any meaningful way.

According to box office tracking, “The Odyssey” has now spent 62 consecutive days above $1 million at the domestic box office, making it the fifth-longest such streak in box office history. The film has reached $604 million domestically and is set to surpass “Incredibles 2’s” $608.6 million total this coming weekend, putting it within striking distance of climbing even further up the all-time North American charts.

That 62-day run ties “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” for the fifth-longest streak of consecutive $1 million days ever recorded domestically. Along the way, the film has already passed “Finding Nemo’s” 59-day streak, “Barbie’s” 46-day streak, and most notably, claimed the outright record for any R-rated release, surpassing “Obsession’s” previous mark of 55 consecutive days.

Much of that sustained performance appears tied to the film’s unusually strong IMAX presence from the very start of its release. “The Odyssey” became only the second film in IMAX history to cross $100 million in that format within just 10 days, trailing only “Avengers: Endgame,” and it has since become the first movie ever to surpass $500 million on IMAX screens alone.

That format strength has kept the film remarkably competitive even now, with “The Odyssey” reportedly outperforming “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in domestic daily grosses on several recent days, despite remaining the No. 2 film at the box office behind Sony’s record-breaking release. The film remains the only true holdover title still clearing $1 million a day at the U.S. box office nine weeks into its run.

With its current $604 million domestic total, “The Odyssey” is closing in on overtaking “The Avengers” as the 15th highest-grossing film of all time in North America. That milestone would mark the final domestic benchmark standing between Nolan’s epic and a firm position among the genre’s biggest theatrical earners.

Globally, the film crossed $1 billion just three weeks after release, becoming Nolan’s first film to reach that mark since 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” a fourteen-year gap between billion-dollar releases for the director. It has also become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of 2026 both domestically and worldwide, trailing only “Deadpool & Wolverine” as the second-highest-grossing R-rated release ever.

With its extended IMAX run continuing to drive strong daily returns, some projections suggest the film’s final domestic total could push toward $650 million, though the current consensus estimate sits closer to $620 million to $630 million. Whatever number “The Odyssey” ultimately lands on, its two-month refusal to slow down has already cemented it as one of the more unusual box office stories of the year.

What do you think of The Odyssey's incredible box office endurance?
