Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Just Set a Record Even Blockbusters Twice Its Size Couldn’t Touch
Summer blockbusters are supposed to fade fast. A huge opening weekend, a steep drop-off, and within a month most films are limping toward the exit from theaters, making way for whatever comes next.
Christopher Nolan’s latest epic never got that memo. Nearly two months after its release, ‘The Odyssey’ is still filling seats at a pace that has box office trackers and industry watchers doing double takes.
The film added another $1.1 million at the domestic box office on Tuesday, extending its streak of consecutive days above the $1 million mark to 61. That means ‘The Odyssey’ has now gone two full months without a single day falling below that threshold, a run that has quietly become one of the most remarkable endurance feats in recent box office history.
The milestone puts ‘The Odyssey’ in genuinely elite company. The 61-day streak now ties 1999’s ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ for the fifth-longest run of consecutive $1 million days ever recorded domestically. Should the film manage to clear the bar again, it would move into the top four, trailing only a handful of the biggest box office juggernauts of all time, including ‘Avatar.’
Along the way, ‘The Odyssey’ had already passed ‘Finding Nemo’s’ 59-day streak to claim the sixth-longest run overall, and it holds the outright record for any R-rated release, having surpassed ‘Obsession’s’ previous mark of 55 consecutive days. For a nearly three-hour, R-rated mythological epic to outlast family-friendly holdovers and franchise tentpoles alike says a lot about the staying power Nolan has built with audiences.

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside a sprawling ensemble that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, ‘The Odyssey’ opened domestically on July 17 with a massive $123.5 million debut. Its domestic total has since climbed past $600 million, keeping pace with a global run that crossed the $1 billion mark within just three weeks of release.
That $1 billion milestone made ‘The Odyssey’ Nolan’s first film to reach the mark since 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and it didn’t stop there. The movie went on to overtake both ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’ to become the highest-grossing release of Nolan’s career.

IMAX screens played an outsized role in that success. ‘The Odyssey’ became only the second film in IMAX history to cross $100 million in that format within just 10 days, trailing behind ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and it has since become the first movie ever to surpass $500 million on IMAX screens alone.
Industry observers point to Nolan’s track record as a major factor behind the film’s staying power. Audiences have shown a consistent willingness to return to his films in theaters, and ‘The Odyssey’ appears to be benefiting from that same loyalty, especially given how thin the current theatrical competition has become in its ninth week of release.
With projections now putting the film’s eventual domestic haul somewhere in the $615 million to $630 million range, ‘The Odyssey’ shows little sign of slowing its unusual momentum. Whether it can string together enough additional days to crack the top four all-time streaks remains to be seen, but the fact that it’s even in the conversation says plenty about the kind of run this has been.
