Cillian Murphy, 49, Steps Out With Fellow Cast Members for Peaky Blinders Movie Premiere
Cillian Murphy was the center of attention in Birmingham recently as the red carpet was unveiled for the world premiere of the new Peaky Blinders film, The Immortal Man. Hundreds of spectators, many sporting the franchise’s signature flat caps and tweed attire, gathered at the city’s Symphony Hall to catch a glimpse of the cast as the acclaimed drama transitioned to the big screen.
The feature-length project serves as a continuation of Steven Knight’s hit television series, with Murphy returning to his career-defining role as Tommy Shelby. Set against the backdrop of 1940, the story finds a weathered Shelby returning to his home city during the height of the Second World War.
During the high-profile event, Knight emphasized that Birmingham remained the heart of the story, serving as one of the film’s most essential components. Murphy echoed this sentiment, noting that the identity of the city and the legacy of the Peaky Blinders are fundamentally linked.
The Oscar-winning actor expressed that hosting the premiere in Birmingham was a necessity for both the creator and the fans. He remarked that it’s important for the fans and for Knight, who crafted the narrative from personal family stories. Murphy added that you can’t separate the two, given how deeply rooted the show is in local history.
Knight credited the global success of the franchise to its dedicated audience, noting that the show grew organically through word of mouth rather than traditional advertising. The film is scheduled for a limited two-week theatrical run starting this Friday before moving to its permanent home on Netflix on March 20. Knight pointed out that while many viewers typically watch the series in isolation at home, the movie offers a rare chance for people to watch it together.
The premiere was attended by several local icons, including John Taylor of Duran Duran and various stars from Aston Villa and Birmingham City. However, the evening primarily focused on the fans, some of whom traveled long distances to celebrate the culture and history of the fictional gang.
To mark the occasion, the city introduced several themed tributes, including a West Midlands Metro tram named in honor of Steven Knight. Additionally, the famous mechanical bull at the railway station, known as Ozzy, was temporarily outfitted with a massive flat cap for the festivities.
In this new chapter, an older Tommy Shelby is forced out of a self-imposed exile to deal with a world descending into wartime chaos. The production features a powerful ensemble, including Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Roth, along with Barry Keoghan, who portrays Shelby’s estranged son, Duke.
Beyond the feature film, the world of Peaky Blinders is far from over, as Netflix has officially greenlit two sequel series. One of these projects is expected to follow the Shelby family’s influence into the mid-1950s during Birmingham’s post-war reconstruction, while the other will likely explore the origins of the gang in a prequel format.
The film serves as a pivotal bridge between the original six seasons and these future installments, ensuring that the razor-capped legacy continues for years to come. With Steven Knight still at the creative helm, the franchise remains one of the most significant cultural exports from the British Midlands.
