‘Clayface’ Box Office Tracking Is Finally Here, and DC’s Riskiest Bet Has a Number to Beat
DC Studios is taking a big swing with its next theatrical release. Rather than another tentpole superhero spectacle, James Gunn’s DC Universe is heading into R-rated body-horror territory with a Batman villain who has never headlined his own film. Now, the first ‘Clayface’ box office tracking numbers are giving the industry a clearer idea of what to expect.
The film marks the DCU’s third theatrical release, following ‘Superman’ and ‘Supergirl’. It’s directed by James Watkins, whose 2024 thriller ‘Speak No Evil’ opened to $11.3 million domestically, and it stars Tom Rhys Harries alongside Naomie Ackie, from a script by Mike Flanagan. According to Box Office Pro’s latest long-range forecast, ‘Clayface’ is tracking for a domestic opening weekend between $23 million and $33 million.
The outlet also offered a note of caution. Boxoffice Pro observed that casual superhero moviegoers are less likely to distinguish one comic book B-list villain from another, meaning a stellar marketing campaign or strong word of mouth will be needed for the film to capture crossover audiences.
The same forecast places ‘Clayface’ alongside ‘Wildwood’, also opening October 23 and tracking at $10 million to $15 million. What makes these numbers encouraging is the film’s modest price tag.
ComicBookMovie reports the movie was made for around $40 million, which fans quickly highlighted in reactions to the tracking news. That smaller scale gives the studio far more breathing room than usual.
Another outlet estimates the film’s realistic break-even point sits between $80 million and $100 million worldwide once marketing and distribution are factored in. For comparison, ‘Supergirl’ reportedly finished its run with only $126 million worldwide and still posted a loss. ‘Superman’ fared better, earning $618.7 million worldwide against an estimated target of around $500 million, according to ComicBookMovie.

Earlier tracking revealed an unusual pattern. Cosmic Book News reported that ‘Clayface’ sat at just 32% awareness, yet audiences who knew about it were planning to see it on opening weekend at nearly double the normal rate.
That suggests the film’s biggest challenge is simply getting the word out. Warner Bros. began ramping up its campaign with the final trailer on September 24, about 4 weeks ahead of release.
With uncertainty around the Paramount merger now settling, ComicBookMovie suggests the studio should be free to increase marketing spend, which could push the projections higher as release day approaches. The release date may also work in the film’s favor. Launching an R-rated body-horror spinoff right before Halloween gives ‘Clayface’ a strong seasonal hook.

ComicBookMovie projects that weekday sales could add another 35% to 50% of the opening weekend total, potentially pushing the film to between $34 million and $48 million in its first full week. If those numbers hold, ‘Clayface’ could become one of the DCU’s most efficient releases yet, proving that smaller, riskier projects can thrive alongside the big blockbusters.
