DC Studios may be getting ready to give fans another look at one of its strangest upcoming movies. New promotional artwork for Clayface has appeared online, and the timing has quickly caught the attention of fans who are waiting for the next trailer. With the film getting closer to its October release, the new image could be a sign that DC is preparing to start the next stage of its marketing campaign.

The artwork does not reveal much about the story, but it sets a very clear mood. It shows Gotham City covered in dark, clay-like material, with the movie’s title standing out in red. The image feels more like horror than a traditional superhero poster, which fits the direction James Gunn and the filmmakers have been taking with the project. The new art has led to speculation that another trailer could arrive soon, although DC has not officially confirmed a trailer date.

Clayface has already received two major pieces of footage this year. The first teaser arrived in April and introduced Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, an actor whose life changes after he suffers a terrible injury. A longer trailer followed in July before Comic-Con, giving audiences a better idea of the movie’s dark story and body-horror style. The new promotional push suggests the studio may now be ready to show even more before the movie reaches theaters.

Harries plays Hagen, a rising actor whose career is damaged after a violent encounter with a Gotham crime boss leaves his face badly disfigured. With his career and appearance destroyed, Hagen becomes desperate for a solution. He eventually turns to a scientist, played by Naomi Ackie, who offers him an experimental treatment that can restore his appearance. The problem is that the treatment comes with serious consequences, and Hagen begins losing control of himself.

That setup gives Clayface a very different tone from many recent DC projects. Instead of focusing mainly on superpowered fights, the movie is built around fear, identity, transformation, and the horror of losing control of your own body. The latest artwork appears to be leaning directly into those ideas, suggesting that the studio wants audiences to know this will not be a typical comic book movie.

James Watkins is directing the film, while Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini wrote the screenplay. Flanagan’s involvement is especially notable because the project reportedly started after he approached DC Studios with his own idea for a Clayface movie. James Gunn has previously praised the script and explained that the studio had not been actively looking to make a Clayface film before Flanagan’s pitch arrived.

The cast also includes David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James. Harries and Ackie are at the center of the story, with their characters helping drive the film’s unusual mix of comic book drama and horror. Unlike Matt Reeves’ The Batman movies, Clayface is part of the main DC Universe being built by Gunn and Peter Safran, which makes the movie important beyond its standalone story.

The release date is another reason the marketing is starting to pick up. Clayface is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 23, placing it directly in the Halloween season. The movie was previously set for an earlier September release, but moving it closer to Halloween gives DC a chance to attract audiences who are looking for something darker during the fall.

The timing also puts Clayface in an interesting position within DC’s larger plans. The movie will arrive only a few weeks before The Batman: Part II, keeping Gotham and its characters in the spotlight even though the two films belong to different continuities. That gives DC two major Gotham-related projects to promote around the same period.

With a reported budget of around $40 million, Clayface is also much smaller than many traditional superhero blockbusters. That could work in its favor because the movie does not need to compete on the same scale as a massive effects-heavy team-up film. Instead, it can focus on atmosphere, character, and horror while offering something different from the rest of the DC lineup.

For now, the new artwork is only a tease, and there is no official confirmation that another trailer is about to arrive. Still, the timing makes the speculation understandable. As October 23 gets closer, DC will need to show audiences why Clayface deserves a place in its new universe. If the next trailer goes even further with the disturbing body-horror elements already shown, the movie could become one of the most unusual and talked-about DC releases yet.
