‘Clayface’ Presales Are Telling Two Very Different Stories, and Only One of Them Is Good

Tracking a movie’s opening weekend has become a spectator sport, and few releases this year have produced as much contradictory data as DC Studios’ Halloween gamble. James Watkins’ R-rated body horror film arrives October 23 carrying a reported $40 million budget and the weight of a franchise still recovering from a rough summer. The ‘Clayface’ presales picture has shifted almost daily.

The early numbers were genuinely alarming. Box Office Theory tracking a week out had the film pacing roughly 80 percent behind ‘Supergirl’ at the same point in its sales cycle, making it the weakest preseller in the DC Universe so far.

Those gaps have since narrowed. The latest update from tracker TheFlatLannister notes ‘Clayface’ had good momentum on Monday before stalling with its Tuesday growth, and it now sits 62 percent behind ‘Supergirl’ for opening weekend, a meaningful improvement on that earlier figure.

Here’s where the story turns. While closing ground on ‘Supergirl’, the film has lost substantial ground against the genre comparison that matters more. ‘Clayface’ now trails ‘Resident Evil’ by 71 percent for opening weekend, worse than the 66 percent gap reported earlier. It also sits 82 percent behind ‘Evil Dead Burn’, a film that debuted to $13.7 million in July from 3,004 theaters.

The tracker’s own read captures the problem neatly. He assessed that ‘Clayface’ is trending a little better than a traditional comic book movie, but is not performing like a horror film, naming ‘Resident Evil’ as the closest comparison and basing his projection on it. That projection lands at roughly $3.5 million in previews and an $18 million to $20 million opening weekend.

The spread between projections is unusually wide for a film this close to release. Variety projected $25 million to $35 million, Boxoffice Pro had $25 million to $30 million, and Box Office Theory’s latest weekend forecast sits at $15 million to $23 million.

Earlier optimism had pointed higher still. Boxoffice Pro’s original long-range forecast on October 2 placed the film between $23 million and $33 million, and some reports in mid-October suggested momentum was building toward the top of that bracket.

One data quirk helps explain the volatility. Tracking showed ‘Clayface’ sitting at just 32 percent awareness, but among people who knew the film existed, 21 percent said they planned to see it opening weekend, the profile of a small but committed audience.

The film quietly lost its IMAX billing in Warner Bros.’ official materials, meaning it won’t benefit from the premium-format presales that typically lift superhero releases. Critics, however, have been kind. The review embargo lifted Wednesday with ‘Clayface’ debuting Fresh at 77 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it among the better-reviewed DC entries and well above ‘Supergirl’.

International results haven’t helped build the case. The film opened 7th in Italy, outside the top 5 in France and third in South Korea, with reported overseas estimates landing near $32 million for its full run.

Budget keeps this from being catastrophic, but not by as much as headlines suggest. The $40 million production cost plus an estimated $30 million in marketing puts break-even around $100 million worldwide.

A sub-$20 million domestic start doesn’t reach that without exceptional holds, and horror films are rarely known for those. ‘Supergirl’, for context, opened to $37.1 million and finished around $126 million globally, a result DC spent months explaining. The pressure is institutional too, with a Skydance insider reportedly setting the expectation that the film better deliver profit rather than break even.

Where do you think Clayface will land at the box office on its opening weekend?
