Clint Eastwood is not someone people usually link with loud, outrageous comedy. He is known for Westerns, crime films, and serious dramas. That is why many fans were surprised when he openly praised one modern comedy and even called it the comedy of the century. That film was Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder.

Eastwood once said that Tropic Thunder made him laugh in a way few films ever had. Talking about the movie, he explained why it worked for him. It’s a great send-up of Hollywood, he said. It looked like they had a good time making it, and Robert Downey Jr was great. When they blow that guy’s head off… you couldn’t help laughing.

The idea of Clint Eastwood sitting in a theater laughing at Tropic Thunder is striking. The movie is loud, messy, and completely over the top. It makes fun of Hollywood, actors, and the film industry itself. Robert Downey Jr’s role as Kirk Lazarus was so extreme that it earned him an Academy Award nomination. Eastwood clearly admired the boldness of the performance, even though it would likely face far more debate if released today.

The film’s ending, which features Tom Cruise dancing in a bald cap, fake beard, and heavy prosthetics, did not bother Eastwood either. According to reports, he enjoyed every minute of it. For someone who rarely talks about comedies he loves, that reaction stood out.

Most critics would probably not call Tropic Thunder the greatest comedy ever made. Many would not even rank it as the best comedy of the 21st century. Still, it is the only comedy Eastwood has publicly singled out with such enthusiasm.

He has never shown much interest in the Judd Apatow-style comedies that dominated the 2000s. But a wild movie about making a movie, packed with big stars and risky jokes, clearly hit the right note with him.

Even now, Eastwood remains active in the film world. At 95 years old, he recently finished work on the legal thriller Juror #2, starring Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette. The film had a very limited theatrical release in late 2024 but found a much larger audience when it arrived on the Max streaming platfor.

According to streaming reports, it became a major success and renewed interest in Eastwood’s later career.

Many fans thought Juror #2 might be his final film. However, reports from World of Reel and Variety suggest that is not the case. As of early 2026, Eastwood is said to be in pre-production on a new mystery project. He has been clear about his feelings on retirement, once telling an Austrian publication, There’s no reason why a man can’t get better with age. Sure, there are directors who lose their touch at a certain age, but I’m not one of them.

Eastwood’s career covers decades of film history, from the Dollars Trilogy and Dirty Harry to Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby. Whether he is making a serious courtroom drama or laughing at a wild Hollywood parody, his taste continues to surprise people. As he approaches his 96th birthday, audiences are still watching closely to see what he does next.

Do you agree with Clint Eastwood that Tropic Thunder is the funniest film of the century, or do you think another comedy deserves that title?
