Clint Eastwood is famous for playing tough, no-nonsense characters, but in 1978 he surprised fans by taking a very different role. In the James Fargo-directed comedy Every Which Way But Loose, Eastwood played a trucker looking for love while traveling with an orangutan.

According to the actor, almost everyone around him advised against it, including his agents and close friends. Critics were skeptical too, but audiences loved the film, making it a big hit at the box office.

Talking to The Guardian, Eastwood revealed that the decision to take the role was more complicated than people realized. “Yeah, I’ve made some strange choices along the way. That was a film my agent and everyone else begged me not to do,” he said.

By that time, Eastwood had already proven himself as a tough action star. Taking a comedic turn required confidence and a willingness to take a risk.

“This is after Dirty Harry, and I’d done a lot of action and adventure films, and they said, ‘That’s not you,’ and I said, ‘Well, what is me? I don’t know,’” Eastwood explained. He said he wanted to make a movie that younger audiences could enjoy.

“To me, it was about reaching out to a younger generation, making a movie that kids could see. With a little less mouth. And there was something hip in an odd way about the movie – this strange guy tells his troubles to an orangutan and loses the girl. Everything about it was a little bit off-centre. It seemed like something to do at the time.”

Working with an orangutan brought its own challenges. Eastwood said, “It was great – it was like working with a six-year-old. Supposedly, they reach about the level of a seven-year-old child, and they only have the attention span of a child, so you have to go on the first take.”

While Every Which Way But Loose is not considered Eastwood’s most serious work, it has endured as a beloved “popcorn classic.” Its success led to a 1980 sequel, which also performed strongly at the box office.

Over time, the film has gained a nostalgic following and remains an example of Eastwood’s willingness to take creative risks. By stepping outside his usual action-star image, he showed that he could entertain in completely different ways while still keeping audiences engaged.

Eastwood’s choice to star in such an unusual comedy shows his confidence and versatility as an actor. It reminds us that even legends need to take chances to grow.
