Comedy Icon of the ’90s, Dies at 96
Dame Patricia Routledge, the acclaimed actress best known for her role as Hyacinth Bucket in the beloved sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has passed away at the age of 96. Her agent confirmed that she died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by loved ones.
Routledge enjoyed a remarkable career spanning stage, television, and film. While she is most widely remembered for her portrayal of the socially ambitious and hilariously pompous Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC series, she also earned praise for her work in Alan Bennett’s television monologues and starred as amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp in BBC One’s mystery series.
Even late into her life, she continued to captivate audiences with her passion for performing and her connection to live theater.
Keeping Up Appearances, which aired from 1990 to 1995, showcased Routledge’s gift for comedy and timing, turning Hyacinth Bucket into an iconic figure of British humor.
The character’s exaggerated pretensions and obsession with social status made her instantly recognizable and endlessly quotable. Speaking about the role, Routledge once said, “She’s an absolute monster and I enjoyed playing her enormously.”
Her work earned widespread recognition, and in 1996 she was voted the nation’s most popular actress at the BBC’s 60th anniversary awards. Colleagues and fans alike have paid tribute to her influence. Roy Clarke, the creator of Keeping Up Appearances, said, “With those talents she took my scripts to the heights. I can only salute her talents and regret their passing.”
Jon Petrie, the BBC’s director of comedy, described Routledge as “an actor of remarkable range” and noted that her portrayal of Hyacinth Bucket has become one of the most iconic performances in British comedy. “Hyacinth became part of the national conversation; instantly recognisable, endlessly quotable, and loved around the world,” he said.
Beyond her television work, Routledge had a celebrated stage career, performing in productions ranging from musicals to classical plays. Her versatility and skill as a performer earned her admiration across generations, and she inspired countless actors and writers with her dedication to craft.
Her agent added, “Even at 96-years old, Dame Patricia’s passion for her work and for connecting with live audiences never waned, just as new generations of audiences have continued to find her through her beloved television roles. She will be dearly missed by those closest to her and by her devoted admirers around the world.”
Dame Patricia Routledge’s legacy is one of humor, talent, and a lifelong commitment to performance. She brought joy to millions through her unforgettable characters and her artistry will be remembered for decades to come.
