Born on March 23, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri, Milford later moved with her family to Illinois. She began her career on stage, performing in improvisational theater and musicals. She earned a Tony Award nomination for her role in Shenandoah, showcasing her strong theatrical talent before transitioning to film.

Milford is best remembered for her role in Coming Home (1978), which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

She also appeared in films like Valentino (1977), a biopic about the silent film star, and the cult classic Heathers (1989). Over her career, she brought depth and warmth to her performances, often standing out in both major studio films and smaller productions.
