Could ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Directors the Russo Brothers Really Become the Highest-Grossing Directors in History?

Superhero cinema has produced plenty of box office milestones over the years, but few filmmakers have benefited from the genre quite like Joe and Anthony Russo. The directing duo built their entire commercial reputation on a handful of Marvel blockbusters that redefined what a franchise film could earn worldwide.

Their track record already places them among an incredibly small group of filmmakers, and two massive upcoming releases could push that standing even further. With the Russos returning to the MCU for one of its most anticipated storylines yet, the conversation around their place in box office history has only intensified.

The Russo Brothers currently rank fourth among the highest-grossing directors of all time, with $6.76 billion at the worldwide box office. That puts them behind only Steven Spielberg at $10.94 billion, James Cameron at $10.59 billion, and Christopher Nolan at $7.35 billion.

Nearly all of that Russo total comes from just two films. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ alone account for close to $5 billion of their career gross, with ‘Endgame’ still standing as the second-highest-grossing film ever made at roughly $2.78 billion worldwide.

Now the Russos have two more massive Marvel tentpoles on the way, and both could reshape where they land on the all-time list. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ are expected to gross more than $5 billion combined, according to industry estimates, with ‘Doomsday’ bringing back Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom alongside a sprawling ensemble that includes the new Fantastic Four cast and returning Avengers like Chris Evans.

If those projections hold, the math gets interesting fast. To catch up to Cameron and Spielberg, the Russos would need to close a gap of roughly $3.2 billion combined between the two upcoming films, meaning each installment would need to clear around $1.6 billion worldwide. Every previous Avengers film has topped $1.4 billion, so that bar isn’t unreasonable given the franchise’s track record.

It’s worth noting the Russos aren’t the only ones chasing that podium right now. Christopher Nolan actually just leapfrogged them into third place thanks to ‘The Odyssey,’ which pushed his career total past $6.9 billion and bumped the Russos down to fourth. That shakeup adds another layer of competition to the race toward the top of the all-time list.

Reaching the very top would still be a tall order. Spielberg and Cameron built their totals over decades filled with era-defining blockbusters like ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘Avatar,’ and ‘Titanic,’ giving them a substantial head start that even two billion-dollar Avengers films might not fully close.

Still, the fact that this conversation is even happening says a lot about what the Russos accomplished with ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame.’ Few directing teams have ever turned two films into nearly $5 billion worldwide, and if ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’ deliver anywhere close to their projected numbers, the Russos could find themselves in a genuine three-way race for the crown.
