‘Coyote vs. Acme’ Gives Fans Who Saved the Movie a Heartfelt Thank-You in the Credits
Movie dedications tend to go toward late collaborators, family members, or industry mentors, rarely toward the general moviegoing public. But then again, few films have had a path to theaters quite as chaotic as ‘Coyote vs. Acme,’ the live-action and animated hybrid starring Will Forte and John Cena that spent years fighting simply to exist.
That fight began back in 2023, when Warner Bros. made the decision to shelve the completed film entirely, opting to use it as part of a tax write-off strategy rather than release it. The move came shortly after the studio had already shelved the nearly finished ‘Batgirl’ and an animated ‘Scooby-Doo’ film using similar reasoning, and it sparked immediate backlash from fans, critics, and industry figures who argued a finished, well-reviewed film deserved an audience.
That backlash never really stopped, and ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ has now made a point of acknowledging it directly. According to reports, the film includes a message in its end credits thanking the audience specifically for saving it, reading: “Dedicated to everyone who posted, shared, held up signs and spoke out when it counted. This film made it to the big screen because of you.”
The sentiment isn’t just a nice gesture; it’s a fairly literal account of what happened. Sustained public pressure, paired with ongoing coverage of the film’s shelving, eventually helped convince distributor Ketchup Entertainment to step in and acquire the movie’s worldwide rights for roughly $50 million, a deal confirmed in the spring following months of fan campaigning across social media.
Director Dave Green and star Will Forte have both been vocal about how much that support meant to them personally throughout the ordeal. Forte has described feeling “gaslit” after finally watching the completed film and realizing just how good it was, only to learn Warner Bros. had no plans to release it at all.
‘Coyote vs. Acme’ follows Wile E. Coyote, voiced by Eric Bauza, as he takes the ACME Corporation to court over decades of faulty products that repeatedly blew up in his face while he chased the Road Runner. Forte plays a billboard accident lawyer who takes on the Coyote’s case, while Cena plays the slick corporate attorney representing ACME on the other side.
Critics who have already seen the film have noted the irony isn’t lost on anyone involved, given the movie’s own plot centers on refusing to give up despite constant setbacks. Reviewers have pointed to the courtroom framing as an unexpectedly clever device for exploring the decades-long relationship between the Coyote and the Road Runner, giving the film more heart than its chaotic production history might suggest.
‘Coyote vs. Acme’ is set to open in theaters on August 28, closing out a journey that began with a completed film nearly erased entirely and ended with one of the more unusual public rescue campaigns in recent memory. For a franchise built around a character who never stops chasing what he wants no matter how many times he fails, it’s hard to imagine a more fitting real-world parallel.
