The Conjuring: Last Rites is set to be the final film in the long-running horror series and will bring back Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film is directed by Michael Chaves, who also worked on The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and it will be released in U.S. theaters on September 5, 2025.

The new movie will be based on the real-life case known as the Smurl haunting, which the Warrens investigated, and the script is co-written by James Wan, who launched the series back in 2013. Along with Wilson and Farmiga, the cast also includes Mia Tomlinson and Ben Hardy.

The addition of Annabelle to the marketing through this quirky popcorn bucket isn’t surprising, since the doll has become one of the most iconic figures in the Conjuring Universe.

Annabelle first appeared briefly in the original Conjuring film before getting her own spin-off series of movies that explored the dark history of the doll. Within the universe, she is portrayed as a vessel for demonic forces and often acts as a gateway to terrifying events, making her one of the creepiest symbols in the franchise.

Even though Annabelle does not always play a central role in the Conjuring films, she has become closely tied to the Warrens’ story. The real-life Warrens claimed to have kept the actual Annabelle doll locked away in a glass case at their Occult Museum to prevent it from harming people.

That legacy has been carried into the films, where Annabelle is repeatedly shown as an object no one should ever underestimate.
