Crunchyroll’s Top Sports Anime Scores Big: New Season and Live-Action Movie Announced
The Blue Lock franchise is expanding in a big way, as fans learned during the recent “BLUELOCK EGOIST FESTA 2025” event in Japan.
It was officially announced that the popular soccer anime is getting a third season, and a live-action movie adaptation is also in the works.
Season 3 will continue the story from the second season, diving into the Neo Egoist League Arc from Muneyuki Kaneshiro’s original manga. This new arc introduces international players who will challenge the Blue Lock team.
Kaneshiro shared his excitement with fans, saying, “Season 3 is officially confirmed!!! We did it… Huge thanks to the entire Egoist production team…! This marks a brand-new beginning for Isagi and for us as well! We’ll be creating this with full ego, eyes spinning, and tongues out, so get on your knees and wait for it!”
Illustrator Yusuke Nomura also commented on the upcoming season: “It’s finally been announced! A brand-new anime series!! We’re finally bringing the Neo Egoist League to life on screen. The eccentric international players—who are even more intense than the Blue Lock team—are coming. Please wait for it!”
In addition to the anime, a live-action Blue Lock movie has been announced, with a planned release in Japan during Summer 2026 to coincide with the World Cup. Production will be handled by CREDEUS, the studio behind live-action adaptations like Kingdom and Golden Kamuy.
Toho will distribute the movie in Japan, though details about the cast and crew, as well as international release plans, are still under wraps.
Blue Lock, written by Kaneshiro and illustrated by Nomura, has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since 2018. As of August, the manga has 35 volumes, and it has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series ever.
The anime adaptation produced by Eight Bit aired its first season from October 2022 to March 2023, followed by a second season in late 2024. A film adaptation based on the Episode Nagi spin-off premiered in April 2024. The series also won the 45th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category in 2021.
This news is sure to excite fans of the series. A third anime season combined with a live-action movie could take Blue Lock’s popularity to new heights. The international matches in the Neo Egoist League arc are particularly anticipated, as they promise high-stakes soccer action and intense character development.
