‘Crystal Lake’ Trailer Finally Answers the Question Fans Have Asked for Decades: Who Is Pamela Voorhees?

The ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise has spent nearly five decades terrifying audiences with its unstoppable, hockey-masked killer, but the woman who started it all has always remained something of a mystery. Pamela Voorhees appeared in just the original 1980 film and its immediate sequel before Jason himself took over as the franchise’s central threat, leaving her full story largely unexplored.

That gap is exactly what Peacock and A24 are setting out to fill with ‘Crystal Lake,’ an official prequel series from Brad Caleb Kane, the creator behind ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ and ‘Warrior.’ The show centers on Pam, played by Linda Cardellini, as a single mother struggling to cope nearly a year after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake while working as a cook at the very camp where he died.

Now, Peacock has released the full trailer, giving fans their most complete look yet at Cardellini’s transformation into one of horror’s most iconic maternal villains. The footage goes considerably deeper than July’s initial teaser, tracking Pam’s slow descent from grieving mother into something far more dangerous once two mysterious strangers show up at her door asking pointed questions about her past.

That investigation sets off a disturbing chain of events across the town, with Pam growing increasingly convinced that Jason never actually died and remains out in the woods somewhere. “I don’t want to heal,” Pam tells local cop Levon Brooks in the trailer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I want to find my son.” As her dissociation deepens, she’s shown at one point waking up beside an unnervingly large knife, with no clear memory of how it got there.

Perhaps the trailer’s most striking reveal involves a brief glimpse of what appears to be a young, sack-headed Jason running through the woods, a detail that immediately complicates the franchise’s established timeline, since the character never actually wore a mask until the third film. That glimpse, paired with a chilling line asking what the townspeople would think if they knew what Pam and Jason “really were,” strongly suggests the series is building toward a genuine mystery about whether Jason is truly gone at all.

Adding another layer of intrigue, the show is also teasing a Voorhees family secret that predates even Jason’s drowning, hinting that Pam’s descent into darkness may be rooted in something far older and more complicated than simple grief.

Rounding out the cast alongside Cardellini and William Catlett’s Levon Brooks are Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom in regular roles, with Callum Vinson playing young Jason and Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik appearing in recurring capacities. Cardellini herself is no stranger to horror-adjacent franchise territory, having previously played Velma Dinkley in the ‘Scooby-Doo’ films alongside her work on shows like ‘Mad Men’ and ‘ER.’

All eight hour-long episodes of ‘Crystal Lake’ are set to premiere together on Peacock on October 15, giving the series a full binge-ready rollout right in time for Halloween season. Given how much unresolved mystery this trailer packs into just a few minutes, fans of the original franchise finally have a real reason to believe Pam’s backstory will get the depth it’s always deserved.
