‘Crystal Lake’ Unveils Its First Look at Young Jason Voorhees, and It’s Already Breaking Hearts

Long before he ever picked up a machete, Jason Voorhees was simply a boy who wanted to swim in the lake with the other kids at camp. That quiet, tragic image is exactly what Peacock’s upcoming ‘Friday the 13th’ prequel series is banking on, trading in decades of slasher iconography for something far more vulnerable.

‘Crystal Lake‘ has spent years building anticipation as the franchise’s first real attempt to explain how a drowned little boy became one of horror’s most enduring monsters. The show centers on Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, a grieving single mother whose son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake, and the disturbing unraveling that follows when two strangers start digging into her past.

Now fans have their first real glimpse of that boy. Bloody Disgusting shared new images from the series showing young Jason splashing in the water alongside other children, followed by a haunting close-up of his partially obscured face, with the outlet noting the images were the first look at the character before “he was a monster.”

The role belongs to Callum Vinson, a young actor already familiar to horror audiences from his recurring part in ‘Chucky.’ Vinson also appeared in the Peacock limited series ‘Long Bright River’ and has a supporting role in the third season of ‘The Night Agent,’ making ‘Crystal Lake’ his most high-profile horror casting yet.

What makes ‘Crystal Lake’ stand out is its structure. Rather than opening with a body count, the series is built around Pamela’s year of grief following Jason’s drowning, with the franchise’s eventual killer waiting at the very end of the story rather than the beginning.

That framing puts Vinson’s young Jason in a strange position for a ‘Friday the 13th’ project. He isn’t the threat here; he’s the reason everything else falls apart, a “sickly” child whose death sends his mother down a path of vengeance that horror fans have known about for more than four decades.

Brad Caleb Kane, known for his work on ‘IT: Welcome to Derry,’ serves as the show’s creator, writer, and showrunner, having taken over the project after Bryan Fuller departed the role in 2024. The series was directed across its eight episodes by Michael Lennox, Celine Held and Logan George, and Quyen Tran.

‘Crystal Lake’ will premiere all eight of its episodes at once on Peacock on October 15, 2026, giving fans a full binge rather than a weekly rollout. Each episode runs approximately 60 minutes, and the cast surrounding Cardellini and Vinson includes William Catlett as Police Chief Levon Brooks, along with Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom.

The series also brings back younger versions of characters familiar to longtime fans of the original 1980 film, including Crazy Ralph, Claudette, and Barry, played respectively by Nick Cordileone, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik.

For a franchise that has largely lived and died by its body count, ‘Crystal Lake’ is making a clear bet that audiences will connect just as deeply with the story of what came before the killing started. Judging by the reaction already building around this first look at young Jason, that gamble may be paying off before the show has even premiered.
