‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Season 2 Just Dropped Its First Promo Image and Night City Has Never Looked More Dangerous
Few anime series have left a crater in popular culture quite the way ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ did. The original 10-episode miniseries premiered on Netflix in September 2022, produced by Japanese animation studio Trigger under the supervision of CD Projekt Red, and it received immediate critical acclaim with praise directed at its writing, characters, action, animation, and worldbuilding. Its success also had a remarkable ripple effect beyond the streaming world, with the anime credited at the time with pushing ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ sales past the 20-million mark.
Now, nearly four years on from that cultural moment, the franchise is preparing to make its grand return. CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger officially announced ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2’ during a panel at Anime Expo 2025, confirming Kai Ikarashi as director and revealing the project is now in production with a planned release on Netflix. The creative team largely carries over from the first season, with Hugo Award-winning writer Bartosz Sztybor serving as showrunner and producer, alongside lead character designer Kanno Ichigo and screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka.
The marketing machine has now kicked into a higher gear, and it started with a bang. DiscussingFilm shared the very first promotional image from ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ Season 2 on June 25, sending the internet into a frenzy. The image dropped through Netflix’s official social media channels alongside a question asking fans if they are ready to meet the crew, and a confirmation that the first proper trailer will arrive on June 29. The artwork is striking, and fans have already started dissecting every pixel for clues about the new story.
The new poster keeps many details hidden, though some viewers have noticed what looks like a possible stream of blood on one side of the image, leading many to believe the next story will be just as brutal and emotionally unforgiving as the first. A lively fan theory has also emerged around the stylized title visible in the image itself, with some viewers speculating that the second season may actually be set in 2071, based on the way the title reads as ‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners 71’ in the artwork. Whether that turns out to be a genuine easter egg or clever fan pattern recognition, it speaks to how deeply invested this audience already is.
What is confirmed is that the new season will chart entirely fresh territory. Studio Trigger has already introduced the first new character, named Weak Kingsley, and described the new anime as a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. The official website teases the premise with the question, “In a city that thrives on the spectacle of violence, if the world is blinded by extremes, how far do you have to go for your story to matter?” It is a hook that suggests the emotional ambition of the first season is very much still the template.
No confirmed release date has been set, with CD Projekt Red and Netflix only indicating a future release window, though a full panel at Anime Expo 2026 on July 3 is expected to bring far more clarity on the characters, story, and potentially a release window. For now, the promo image alone has been enough to reignite the fanbase in a serious way, and with a full trailer days away, the wait is almost over.
Given how haunted fans still are by David Martinez’s fate, do you think ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2’ has what it takes to build a new crew we care about just as deeply, or is Night City’s new story already making you nervous?
