Cynthia Erivo’s Fierce New Trailer Proves Why Critics Can’t Stop Talking About ‘Prima Facie’

Stage-to-screen adaptations carry a particular kind of pressure, especially when the source material became a genuine cultural phenomenon in its own right. Few recent productions have generated quite the buzz that Suzie Miller’s acclaimed one-woman play managed during its celebrated theatrical run.

That production, which won Jodie Comer both an Olivier Award and a Tony Award for her searing solo performance, set an almost impossibly high bar for anyone attempting to bring the story to a different medium. Translating that raw, singular intensity into a traditional film format was always going to be a delicate balancing act.

Now, Sony Pictures has released the first official trailer for the film adaptation, and it’s giving audiences their clearest look yet at how Susanna White’s version handles that challenge. ‘Prima Facie,’ starring Cynthia Erivo, arrives in UK and Irish cinemas on November 13, following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.

The film follows Tessa, a fiercely successful defense barrister who built her career from a working-class background, often defending men accused of sexual assault with the belief that the adversarial legal system ultimately reveals the truth. That conviction is shattered when she herself becomes a victim of assault at the hands of a colleague, forcing her to confront the very system she’s spent her career championing.

Erivo, who also serves as a producer on the project, leads an ensemble cast that includes Daniel Ings, Simon Russell Beale, Elizabeth Dulau, and Noma Dumezweni. It’s a notable structural shift from the original stage version, which relied entirely on a single actress carrying every role across a minimalist set.

Reception out of TIFF has been genuinely split. The Hollywood Reporter’s Caryn James described the adaptation as “a near-total muddle,” while praising “some stunning supporting performances.” IndieWire’s review was similarly critical of the film’s tonal shifts, arguing that its reliance on constant voiceover left audiences “almost nothing to discover.”

What nearly every review agrees on, however, is Erivo’s performance itself. Even critics unconvinced by the broader film have consistently singled her out, with some outlets suggesting her work here could factor into awards season conversation despite the mixed overall reception. It’s a familiar pattern for adaptations built around a demanding central performance, where the lead actor’s work becomes the one point of consensus amid otherwise divided opinions.

The trailer itself carries an explicit content warning noting the film’s themes of sexual assault, signaling just how directly the adaptation engages with its source material’s difficult subject matter. That unflinching approach has drawn both praise and criticism in nearly equal measure, with some reviewers questioning creative choices around how certain scenes are depicted, while others have called the film’s courtroom sequences among its strongest material.

Directed by Susanna White, whose credits include several episodes of Disney+’s ‘Andor,’ the film is written by Miller herself, adapting her own acclaimed stage work for the screen. With an Australian release following on January 14, 2027, and no U.S. distributor yet announced, international audiences will have to wait a bit longer to weigh in on their own.

For now, the conversation around ‘Prima Facie’ seems destined to center on the same tension defining most of its early reviews: a genuinely difficult, ambitious subject matter, carried by a performance critics can’t stop praising, even when the film surrounding it doesn’t always match her intensity.
