Daily Wire Drops First Epic Trailer for Fantasy Series ‘The Pendragon Cycle’
The Daily Wire is preparing to release a new fantasy series, The Pendragon Cycle, based on Stephen R. Lawhead’s popular novels. The show is set to premiere on DailyWire+ on January 22. This marks the company’s largest television project so far, expanding its focus from documentaries and feature films into scripted fantasy.
The project was first announced in November 2022, when The Daily Wire purchased the film and television rights to Lawhead’s series.
In July 2023, co-founder and co-CEO Jeremy Boreing announced he would take a leave of absence from the company to co-direct the seven-episode series. Production took place abroad, with filming in Italy and Hungary.
British actor Tom Sharp has been cast in the lead role as Merlin, with other main cast members including Brett Cooper as Ganieda, Rose Reid as Charis, and James Arden as Taliesin.
Additional actors in the series include Finney Cassidy, Myles Clohessy, Alex Laurence Phillips, Daniel Fathers, and Emree Franklin. Production began in Europe in September 2023.
The Pendragon Cycle novels are inspired by Arthurian legend and mix historical settings with fantasy elements. Originally planned as a four-book series, Lawhead’s publisher stopped after the first three books, known as The Pendragon Trilogy.
Lawhead later expanded the series with two additional books, Pendragon and Grail, which explore events between the earlier books. The final novel, Avalon, takes place centuries later, and a seventh book, Aurelia, was released in January of this year.
As a teenager, @StephenLawhead's The Pendragon Cycle reshaped my understanding of faith, courage, and purpose. The series retells Arthurian legend in the context of Roman-dominated Britain, covering the fourth to sixth centuries. Boreing said in a statement, “The Pendragon Cycle is the culmination of a 10-year vision to create culture, not just to criticize it. Lawhead’s novels present a visceral, masculine Christianity in a world of conflict and mystery.“
“It isn’t saccharine or clean. In short, it is very much like our world. I’m so happy to share our adaptation, and the work of our remarkable cast and crew, with the Daily Wire audience.”
This adaptation represents a major step for The Daily Wire, co-founded by Boreing and Ben Shapiro, into large-scale television production. While the company has previously created several feature films and animated series, The Pendragon Cycle is its most ambitious scripted series to date.
The Daily Wire is clearly aiming high with this series. Turning a detailed and faith-driven fantasy world into a TV show is no small feat, and it will be interesting to see how audiences respond. Do you plan to watch The Pendragon Cycle when it premieres? Share your thoughts in the comments.
