Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell Join Taylor Swift for Her Cinematic “Patient Zero” Music Video

Taylor Swift has spent the past few days sending fans into full detective mode, and the “Patient Zero” music video is the latest piece of the puzzle. It started on September 14, when Swift appeared in a pre-taped Emmys sketch alongside host Mariska Hargitay, playing a ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ detective and staring into the camera to deliver a string of cryptic phrases ending with “North or South.”

Swifties eventually cracked the code, noticing that the third letter of each phrase spelled out “encore.” On September 22, Swift announced “Patient Zero” as her first new single since her wedding to Travis Kelce this summer, and a day later she revealed “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,” an expanded edition of her 2025 album featuring 4 new tracks.

Now fans know exactly what that “North or South” clue may have been pointing to. On Thursday, September 24, Swift debuted a 13-second teaser for the “Patient Zero” music video on ‘CBS Mornings’, confirming that Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell both star alongside her.

According to Variety, the teaser shows Swift and Johnson mirroring each other across a bathroom sink, diving into water, and standing together at a grave. A close-up of Swift crying follows, before Farrell steps into frame and the 3 stars meet, all dressed in black.

The video also comes with serious filmmaking credentials. It features the work of Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, known for ‘The Revenant’, ‘Birdman’, and ‘Gravity’.

The reaction online was instant. A Film Updates post sharing the underwater clip passed 80.1K views and 4.2K likes, with one fan calling it “absolute Swiftnema” and another saying only Swift brings this level of effort to her videos.

Some fans had been expecting something else entirely. After the Emmys sketch, many Swifties theorized that “North or South” referred to Johnson, who leads the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s ‘Verity’, and suspected Swift had recorded a song for the movie. One reply to the teaser even admitted they thought it was ‘Verity’ footage at first.

Swift won’t make fans wait long for the full video. “Patient Zero” arrives Friday, September 25, alongside “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,” and the complete music video will debut at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27.

The timing is especially fitting because Swift will be honored at the VMAs with the show’s inaugural Artist-Director Award. Casting 2 major film stars and an Oscar-winning cinematographer seems like the perfect way to celebrate the milestone.

The new songs have a sweet origin story. In her Instagram announcement, Swift explained that fans gave “The Life of a Showgirl” the biggest first week for an album in history, so she traveled to Sweden to celebrate with her collaborators Max Martin and Shellback, where the new tracks came together.

Alongside “Patient Zero,” the expanded edition includes “Cleveland!,” an apparent nod to Kelce, who grew up in the Ohio city, as well as “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.” Variety noted that Swift had quietly teased the project long before, placing the phrase “Patient for the encore” in the frame of her “Opalite” music video.

This is far from the first time Swift has recruited Hollywood talent. HuffPost UK pointed out that her “Bad Blood” and “You Need To Calm Down” videos were packed with celebrity appearances, while her “Fortnight” video starred Post Malone and cast ‘Dead Poets Society’ co-stars Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles as mad scientists.
