Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett Turn up the Heat at the ‘Verity’ UK Gala Without Anne Hathaway

The countdown to ‘Verity’ is officially on, and the Colleen Hoover adaptation is making its way across the Atlantic in style. Amazon MGM Studios’ psychological thriller stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Córdova, and Brady Wagner, with Michael Showalter directing from a script by Nick Antosca. The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer played by Johnson, who is hired to ghostwrite for renowned author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway.

While working at the remote Crawford estate, Lowen uncovers what appear to be Verity’s autobiographical notes, filled with chilling confessions about her husband Jeremy, played by Hartnett. On September 24, the film held its UK Gala Screening at the Curzon Mayfair in London, and Johnson and Hartnett posed together on the red carpet.

Johnson wore a cream lace dress from Colleen Allen’s Spring 2026 collection, according to Red Carpet Fashion Awards, with visible black underwear beneath the sheer fabric. Hartnett kept things sleek in a dark buttoned jacket over a crisp white shirt, a sharp contrast to his co-star’s delicate look.

Johnson’s outfit sparked some debate among fashion watchers. Red Carpet Fashion Awards noted that the actress clearly loves a lace dress and admitted she looked good, but said the black underwear felt jarring beneath the cream fabric.

The site suggested either the black version of the dress or neutral underwear would have worked better, while acknowledging that the sultry styling suited a sexy thriller. Still, plenty of fans seemed to love the look, judging by the reaction online.

Hathaway was notably absent from the London event, leaving UK press duties to her co-stars. She was photographed in New York around the same time, where Just Jared reported she was doing press for the film.

Lainey Gossip pointed to an obvious explanation, noting that Hathaway announced her pregnancy more than 3 months ago and that air travel is typically not recommended in the final weeks. The outlet added that a New York premiere is planned for next week, while Red Carpet Fashion Awards described ‘Verity’ as Hathaway’s fifth film of the year.

‘Verity’ was self-published in 2018 and became a literary sensation, selling more than 1 million copies in 2023 alone, according to Variety. The story has been described as a gothic, psychosexual thriller in the vein of ‘Rebecca’ and ‘Gone Girl’.

Johnson and Hartnett joined Hathaway’s cast in December 2024, and principal photography began in February 2025, with Hathaway and Hartnett filming in New York City. Production wrapped in April 2025, and the film was originally set for a May 15, 2026 release. The adaptation follows another Hoover hit. ‘It Ends With Us’, starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, became a sleeper success and earned more than $346 million worldwide.

Johnson has been in the spotlight for other reasons lately. After Taylor Swift’s Emmys sketch included the cryptic phrase “North or South,” many fans theorized it was linked to ‘Verity’ and that Swift had recorded a song for the movie. Instead, Johnson turned out to be starring in Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video, which only added to the buzz around the actress.

‘Verity’ arrives in cinemas on October 2, giving fans just over a week to wait. With Johnson and Hartnett handling the London promotion and Hathaway set for New York, the film’s rollout is shaping up to be one of the fall’s most closely watched.
