Dakota Johnson Claims She Doesn’t Even Remember ‘Madame Web’, and the Internet Is Loving It

Some movies fade quietly from an actor’s résumé, but Dakota Johnson’s ‘Madame Web‘ has become a punchline she seems more than happy to keep alive. Years after its rocky release, the Sony superhero film still follows her from interview to interview.

The movie arrived in theaters on February 14, 2024, and opened to a negative response from audiences and critics. It marked the lowest opening for any film in Sony’s Spider-Man universe and one of the worst starts for any movie based on a Marvel Comics character. Johnson played Cassandra Webb, a clairvoyant paramedic linked to Spider-Man, alongside Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott.

Now Johnson has delivered what may be her most efficient ‘Madame Web’ comment yet. While promoting her upcoming film ‘Verity’ alongside Anne Hathaway, she was once again asked about her infamous superhero outing. Rather than offering any new reflection, she simply said she doesn’t remember that movie at all.

The moment exploded online almost instantly. Reigniting conversation about her already legendary history of deadpan non-answers. Many readers saw it less as a slight and more as a continuation of the bit that made her original press tour so beloved.

Fans were quick to join in. Replies to the post ranged from users simply repeating her line back in amusement to one joking that the film was so bad she had memory-holed it entirely.

The response fits a pattern Johnson has maintained since 2024. During the original promotional run, many felt she appeared uninterested and dismissive of the movie, with some social media users calling her interviews unhinged. Others argued the chaos only made them want to see the film more.

Her quips back then became instant memes. She admitted to having seen just 4% of Marvel movies, which she translated as 15 minutes of one, and told Magic FM that not watching her own movies was a form of self-care. In another interview, she humorously couldn’t name a single Tom Holland Spider-Man movie.

Not everything was as damning as it seemed, though. The Hollywood Reporter noted that several of her quotes were willingly misconstrued, spawning headlines claiming she doubted the film would be good when she was actually describing her own performance.

Johnson has also reflected on the experience more sincerely. Speaking to Bustle, she said she wasn’t surprised by how things turned out, calling it a real learning experience while acknowledging it’s not nice to be part of something that’s ripped to shreds. She also admitted she probably would never do anything like it again because she doesn’t make sense in that world.

She also suggested the project changed significantly along the way, noting the script about a psychic paramedic was radically different from what she originally read. Her costar Sweeney joined in on the jokes too, quipping during her ‘Saturday Night Live’ monologue that audiences definitely did not see her in ‘Madame Web’.

These days, Johnson’s focus is firmly on a very different project. ‘Verity’, starring Hathaway, Johnson and Josh Hartnett, is scheduled to premiere in the United States on October 2. As long as the press tour continues, though, interviewers are unlikely to stop bringing up her Marvel misadventure.

If her latest answer is any indication, Johnson has no plans to stop playing along. For a film that gave the internet endless memes, her selective memory might be the most fitting epilogue of all.
