Daniel Radcliffe’s Son Still Doesn’t Know He’s Harry Potter, and That’s Entirely by Design

Being inseparable from a single role is the trade-off that comes with fronting one of the biggest franchises in film history. Daniel Radcliffe played the boy wizard across all 8 films between 2001 and 2011, and his work as a leading man has grossed over $8.38 billion worldwide. More than a decade after putting down the wand, the Daniel Radcliffe son Harry Potter question has become one of the more revealing windows into how he handles that legacy.

The actor has been notably guarded about his family life. He welcomed a son with longtime partner Erin Darke in April 2023, and the couple has never publicly revealed the child’s name, a deliberate privacy decision.

What they haven’t revealed to their son is just as deliberate. Speaking to The New York Times, Radcliffe confirmed his child had no idea he played the character, and explained the reasoning plainly: “For as long as I can just be his dad, and he won’t know me as anything else, I will maintain that for as long as I can.”

The anecdote behind that quote is the part fans have latched onto. Radcliffe was given a ‘Harry Potter’ DVD to sign and left it sitting on the kitchen counter, where his then-2-year-old ended up sitting right beside it.

He seized the moment as an experiment. Radcliffe asked his son who the person on the cover was, hoping to see whether the boy would recognize a younger version of his father. The answer was no, and Radcliffe described the realization as great. For a man who has spent 15 years fielding questions about the franchise, that flicker of anonymity at home clearly meant something.

Radcliffe has been clear-eyed about the inevitability of it all. He has acknowledged his son will discover the series eventually, given that the books remain a cultural fixture and streaming makes avoidance nearly impossible.

His plan isn’t suppression so much as deferral. He has said he would happily read J.K. Rowling’s books with his son if the boy ever shows interest, noting that if his child gets into them, he totally will.

The on-screen version is where it gets interesting. Radcliffe has said he would rather show the new HBO adaptation, explaining that hopefully he can just put that on and his son doesn’t have to watch him in it.

He has framed that as a relief rather than a snub. Radcliffe said he is actually delighted that when his kid grows up and is into ‘Harry Potter’, he can watch a version that isn’t him, adding that it means someone else will eventually answer all the questions.

The actor has been unusually open about how much the role of dad has reshaped him. He described himself as an emotional wreck in the best way, saying he cries far more and that watching his son’s joy transforms you.

The small domestic details appear to be his favorite part. Radcliffe has recounted a programmable night-light that switches from blue to yellow at 6:30, prompting his son to shout that it’s yellow and demand to be collected.

Radcliffe’s protectiveness comes from direct experience. He has said he honestly wouldn’t want his son to act or become famous, pushing back on the idea that the ‘Harry Potter’ kids are proof child stardom works out fine.

His explanation was pointed. He noted that he, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson all worked really hard on themselves to make it work, crediting a crew that stayed largely consistent for 10 years and parents who balanced treating it as special while acknowledging the weirdness.

Even on the prospect of his son acting, he has set conditions. Radcliffe said not unless he really wants to, adding that if his son could act without becoming famous, he could encourage it.

Do you think Daniel Radcliffe is right to keep his Harry Potter fame a secret from his son for now?
