‘Marvel Rivals’ is an upcoming third-person hero shooter game developed by NetEase Games in collaboration with Marvel Games. It will be free-to-play and available on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The game features 6v6 player-versus-player battles, where players can use “Dynamic Hero Synergy” to boost combat efficiency. The game will include 33 playable Marvel characters and five locations, such as Asgard and Tokyo 2099.

There are three game modes: Convoy, Domination, and Convergence. The story involves Doctor Doom and his 2099 counterpart, leading to multiple universes merging, with heroes and villains fighting to prevent either Doctor Doom from winning.

Recently, the trailer for the game was released showcasing all the characters in the game, and now Danny Koo, Executive Producer for Marvel Games recently had a gues appearance on The Official Marvel Podcast and explained the development of the game in a bit more detail:

Koo said ‘Marvel Rivals’ offers a unique experience by combining familiar Marvel locations and characters in a six-vs-six, third-person, team-based superhero shooter. It stands out as the only game where players can control Marvel heroes or villains in this type of gameplay.

So many many months ago we were discussing, hey, if we’re gonna make the greatest game on Earth, and then, on the Marvel side we are missing player versus player type of games, like what kind of game would we like to make. And ultimately we landed on: “Hey why don’t we create our own six versus six video game that stars all our greatest superheroes and villains?

The producer said the game brings together familiar Marvel locations and characters in a unique way, offering a one-of-a-kind six-vs-six superhero shooter. The game’s strong storytelling, which is part of Marvel’s identity, helps players instantly recognize the settings, like Tokyo 2099 or Asgard.

They battle in all the iconic locations in the Marvel Universe and all this familiarity of the game that players have played before Marvel Rivals and all the familiarity that the Marvel fans know from the Marvel Universe. When you smash it together, there’s no better way to say it. It’s like this is the only six versus six third person team based superhero shooter that you can play Marvel heroes or villains.

Marvel is good at storytelling which’s in our DNA so we still need to tell a story so when you go into this world you can tell for example, Tokyo 2099 immediately you know that it’s from Tokyo. It’s based in 2099 and the world is ruled by the Spidey characters like from the Spider-Verse right. Then we have Asgard and the nine Realms united under one giant tree – Yggdrasil

We smashed all this stuff together. The things that are familiar but very different and fresh.

Koo also mentioned that the game will feature a lot of Easter Eggs.
