‘Dark Matter’ Characters and the Actors Who Play Them (with pictures)

Joel Edgerton

Edgerton plays Jason Dessen, a college professor in Chicago and a physicist who teaches quantum mechanics. Jason arrives in an alternate reality in which he has been missing for 14 months. That jolt sets up the dual identity that drives the entire series.

Edgerton plays two different versions of the character, and the performance establishes the duality between them. His earlier roles include Tom Buchanan in ‘The Great Gatsby’ and Owen Lars in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’. Apple ordered the series in March 2022 with Edgerton already cast to star.

Edgerton also serves as an executive producer. After the first season, Crouch thanked the cast, the crew and the city of Chicago, as noted by Apple TV Press. It reflects how closely the production is tied to Jason’s hometown setting.

Jennifer Connelly

Connelly plays Daniela Dessen, Jason’s wife and a Chicago artist. She and Jason both set aside their careers in favor of family. That shared sacrifice gives the domestic scenes their weight.

The story also reveals that her relationship with Jason failed in an alternative timeline. That detail turns Daniela into more than a spouse waiting at home, because she becomes a measure of what Jason gained and lost. Connelly is an Academy Award winner, and her credits include Alicia Nash in ‘A Beautiful Mind’ and Marion Silver in ‘Requiem for a Dream’.

Their 15 year old son Charlie is played by Oakes Fegley. He attends St. Peter High School, enjoys anime and skateboarding, and hopes to attend an art school. Fegley previously appeared in ‘Pete’s Dragon’ and ‘The Fabelmans’. Charlie rounds out the family Jason is trying to protect.

Alice Braga

Braga plays Amanda Lucas, Jason’s colleague in an alternative timeline who works as a lab psychiatrist. She worries about his mental health after the 14 month disappearance. Her clinical instincts place her in direct tension with the impossible story Jason tells.

Amanda and Leighton show Jason their groundbreaking invention in the episode titled ‘The Box’. That moment ties her to the technology at the heart of the plot. It also shows that she is both a caretaker and a collaborator in the science.

Braga is known for ‘I Am Legend’, ‘Elysium’ and ‘Queen of the South’. She returns for the second season.

Jimmi Simpson

Simpson plays Ryan Holder, Jason’s friend and a famous neuroscientist who wins the Pavia Prize. Jason is semi secretly resentful of that success, a feeling tied to the path not taken. The prize sets the emotional stakes before the abduction even begins.

Ryan clashes with Jason about the past during an alternative timeline. That friction gives the story a personal edge beyond its science. It suggests that the multiverse magnifies old regrets as much as it opens new worlds.

Simpson is recognized for ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’, ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Westworld’. He is part of the returning ensemble for the second season.

Dayo Okeniyi

Okeniyi plays Leighton Vance, Jason’s colleague and the CEO of a neuroscience company. He and Amanda welcome Jason back to what they call reality. His corporate authority makes him one of the more ambiguous figures in the story.

Okeniyi’s earlier work includes ‘The Hunger Games’, ‘See’ and ‘Fresh’. Apple’s second season first look photos included an image of Okeniyi alongside Edgerton. The pairing signals that Leighton remains central to Jason’s path going forward.
