David Corenswet might be known everywhere right now as Superman, but when he’s not saving the world on-screen, he’s just a regular guy with some big opinions about movies. In a recent chat with Brittany Broski on her Royal Court show, Corenswet opened up about some of his favorite things, and fans learned he’s not only a huge Star Wars fan but also seriously into James Bond.

During the interview, Broski asked Corenswet about his personal “hot takes.” That’s when the actor shared his thoughts on James Bond movies, focusing especially on Casino Royale. He didn’t hold back on calling it the best of them all.

“And my other hot take is, have you seen Casino Royale?” Corenswet asked, before going into a detailed explanation of why he thinks the movie is so great. He brought up the film’s black-and-white opening scene, which shows Bond’s first kill.

In this sequence, Bond tracks down an MI6 agent who’s been selling secrets. The moment is quiet and serious, with Bond confronting the man in his office. “The guy pulls out his gun and click, no bullets. Bond says, ‘I know where you keep your gun,’” Corenswet explained.

He continued by describing how brutal the fight is. Bond ends up killing the agent by drowning him in a sink, which Corenswet pointed out as being particularly harsh. He also recalled the conversation that follows with Bond’s target. “He’s saying things like ‘Oh he made you feel it, did he?’ because he is not a double-O yet, he hasn’t killed anybody, and it takes two kills to become double-O.” Corenswet then quoted one of Bond’s famous lines from the scene: “Don’t worry, the second is…” before Bond shoots the man, finishing the sentence himself with “Yes, considerably.”

For Corenswet, this entire sequence is what makes Casino Royale stand out as the best Bond movie ever made. “The brilliant thing about this film is, and it’s the greatest Bond film ever made, it’s one of the best movies of all time I think,” he said.

He didn’t stop there. Corenswet explained a detail that he thinks many fans miss. After Bond kills the man in the office, the movie flashes back to the earlier bathroom fight, showing that Bond’s first kill wasn’t as clear as it seemed. The man Bond drowned actually wakes up and tries to attack him, forcing Bond to shoot him.

Corenswet said this twist changes the way the audience should see Bond’s journey to becoming a double-O agent. “My hot take is everybody thinks that the second kill is when Bond kills the main bad guy in the office later, and he’s like ‘yes considerably…’ But what actually happened is experientially Bond had his second kill because he drowned the guy and then had to shoot him,” he explained.

Casino Royale, released in 2006 with Daniel Craig taking over the role of James Bond, was widely praised when it came out. Critics loved its serious tone, action sequences, and Craig’s fresh take on Bond. Many fans and critics alike consider it one of the best films in the franchise. The movie has stayed popular over the years and often appears near the top of “best Bond movies” lists.

Now, thanks to Corenswet, even more fans might revisit Casino Royale to see what all the fuss is about. And maybe they’ll agree with Superman himself that it really is the best Bond movie ever made.
