David Jonsson’s Fresh Photos Have Marvel Fans Buzzing About the Next Black Panther
The MCU is entering a new era in Wakanda, and David Jonsson is right at the center of it. The ‘Alien: Romulus’ breakout has become one of Marvel’s most talked-about new signings. Marvel announced that he was heading to Wakanda, and fans haven’t stopped discussing him since.
The news came at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, when Kevin Feige and director Ryan Coogler took the stage. They revealed that Jonsson would play an adult version of T’Challa’s son, whom Chadwick Boseman’s character had in the 2018 original. The character is Toussaint, also known as T’Challa II, introduced by Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia in the post-credits scene of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.
That brings us to this week’s fan frenzy. On September 19, the account Cosmic Marvel shared newly surfaced photos of Jonsson on X and reminded followers that he will play the next Black Panther. One image shows him beside a lake, sipping from a small cup while wearing sunglasses. The other catches him on a sunny, palm-lined path in a cap and shorts.
The post pulled in 89.3K views, 3.3K likes, and 132 reposts within hours. Replies quickly turned into a running joke, with one fan pointing out that the people who wanted T’Challa recast had claimed he wasn’t in shape. Another reply suggested he has exactly what it takes for the part. For a casting announcement that is now almost two months old, the enthusiasm still feels fresh.
The casting itself was a genuine surprise. Damson Idris had looked like a favorite in earlier speculation, but Coogler said he cast the new T’Challa after seeing Jonsson in ‘The Long Walk’. Feige also said the deal had been kept secret, and that Coogler met with Jonsson privately five or six months before the announcement.
Jonsson is 32, so he arrives as a fully grown hero rather than a teenager finding his feet. That age is a reminder of how much the timeline may change in the wake of ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, since Boseman was 40 when he first played the hero in ‘Captain America: Civil War’. With Letitia Wright still playing Shuri, it’s unclear whether he will be presented as her nephew or her brother.
‘Black Panther 3’ arrives in theaters on December 15, 2028, and will be shot entirely on large-format celluloid film, a first for the MCU. Coogler returns after his Oscar-winning vampire movie ‘Sinners’, and both Wright and Winston Duke are set to come back. The film will follow ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ in December 2027.
Beyond that, details are scarce, which has left plenty of room for speculation. One rumor from insider Daniel Richtman claims Jonsson will make his MCU debut in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, though Marvel hasn’t confirmed anything. Fans have also filled the gap with their own designs, including fan art that mixes Boseman’s suit with the comic-book look and adds the cape.
For now, the real story is how quickly Jonsson has won over the fanbase. A few candid photos were enough to send his name climbing again, and the reaction suggests the skeptics have gone quiet. With more than two years until his solo debut, Marvel has plenty of time to keep the momentum going.
