In April 2024, it was revealed that Steven Spielberg is working on a new movie about UFOs, based on an original idea of his. David Koepp, who has collaborated with Spielberg on films like ‘Jurassic Park,’ will write the script.

The film boasts an impressive cast, including Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. Universal Pictures is set to release the movie in theaters on May 15, 2026, making it one of the most anticipated sci-fi films on the horizon.

Currently, not much is known about the movie, but Spielberg’s long-time collaborator, David Koepp, did hint at what fans can expect in his most recent interview:

Speaking with Deadline on the red carpet for Jurassic World Rebirth, Koepp confirmed that filming for the upcoming project wrapped just a few weeks ago. When asked if the film had an official title, he simply said, “Not that we’re talking about… not that we’ve released.”

The movie has been surrounded by rumors, especially with people guessing it might be about UFOs. Koepp didn’t confirm or deny that, but instead spoke about the tone and feel of the film. He said, “What he does so brilliantly is that he combines a vast spectacle with really honest, human emotion. Unlike, I think, any other director—it’s a very emotional experience, this movie.”

Koepp also shared that the idea for the film originally came from Spielberg himself. According to him, Spielberg wrote a 50-page treatment that served as the base for the full script. “He was the most involved as he’s been on any movie I’ve written for him to direct,” Koepp added.

Previously, in a separate interview, Koepp did hint that this upcoming movie will be a return to roots for Spielberg, hence where the UFO rumors came from:

He described the project as reminiscent of Spielberg’s classic sci-fi style, saying it “harkens back to maybe a different tone than what he’s done lately” and brings back “something he used to do that he hasn’t done for a little bit.” Though Koepp was cautious about revealing too much, he confirmed the film would reflect Spielberg’s earlier, iconic works.

“Yes, it is like a sci-fi… Well, I don’t know. I’m not supposed to say. But, yes, it is. It does harken back to maybe a different tone than [what he’s done lately]. Something he used to do that he hasn’t done for a little bit.”
