David Tennant is a major name in the world of entertainment. The Scottish actor has made a name for himself on the stage, but also on the screen. You may know him from the hit series Doctor Who, as well as the brilliant mystery drama Broadchurch, but he also appeared in the Harry Potter series on the big screen.

In The Goblet of Fire, David Tennant appeared as the Deatheater Barty Crouch Jr., who kidnapped and impresonated Alastor Moody as Hogwart’s DADA professor. Outside his acting work, Tennant is also an activist and has been supporting various minority rights for some time now.

In light of the trans rights-related controvery started by J.K. Rowling, David Tennant has recently decided to comment on that issue, becoming the latest Harry Potter alumn to defend trans people against Rowling’s comments.

Fans Believe They’ve Discovered the Source of Rowling’s Transphobia

You probably remembered the recent, much-debated decision of the UK’s Supreme Court, which reasoned that “woman” and “sex” refer only to biological woman and to biological sex. Rowling, a staunch opponent of trans rights, called this decision a big win, which sparked further resentment from fans.

In light of these recent events, David Tennant, who had been more or less quiet about the issue so far, was asked to comment on the whole situation and, as expected, the actor decided to defend trans people and criticize Rowling.

“JK Rowling is a wonderful author who’s created brilliant stories, and I wish her no ill will, but I hope that we can all as a society, just let people be. Just get out of people’s way,” he said, before adding a more general comment. “We look back on that now as a medieval, absurd thing to try and say, and I think the way the trans community is being demonised and othered is exactly the same. It’s become this kind of political football.”
