DC Studios Is Developing a New ‘Constantine’ Movie, and Its Writer Comes From the ‘Evil Dead’ Franchise
John Constantine has had a long and winding road on screen. The chain-smoking occult detective debuted in ‘The Saga of the Swamp Thing’ #37 in 1985, created by Alan Moore, Stephen R. Bissette and John Totleben, and went on to headline ‘Hellblazer’, which ran for 300 issues until 2013.
Keanu Reeves brought the character to the big screen in 2005’s ‘Constantine’, directed by Francis Lawrence and co-starring Rachel Weisz. Matt Ryan later played him in NBC’s ‘Constantine’ and across the Arrowverse, while plans for a ‘Justice League Dark’ film and an HBO Max series from Bad Robot never made it to screens.
Now the occult antihero is back in development. According to Deadline’s exclusive report, a ‘Constantine’ movie is in the works at DC Studios, with ‘Evil Dead Wrath’ filmmaker Francis Galluppi hired to write the script.
The project is in very early development, and no other names are attached yet. MovieWeb notes that there is no director on board, though Galluppi could be in line to direct if ‘Evil Dead Wrath’ performs well.
Galluppi made his feature debut with ‘The Last Stop in Yuma County’, which premiered to critical acclaim at Fantastic Fest. The film impressed Sam Raimi enough that Galluppi was hired in April 2024 to write and direct the next ‘Evil Dead’ movie.
That film, ‘Evil Dead Wrath’, is the 7th entry in the franchise and a prequel to ‘The Evil Dead’, set in 1972. Principal photography took place in Auckland, New Zealand, and Warner Bros. will release it on April 7, 2028.
Raimi has praised Galluppi’s command of suspense, saying he knows when to keep audiences in simmering tension and when to hit them with explosive violence. That instinct for horror could make him a natural fit for one of DC’s darkest characters.
The news raises questions about the long-awaited ‘Constantine 2’. Reeves and Lawrence have been attached to a direct sequel, with writer Akiva Goldsman, and the team planned to pitch it to DC Studios as an Elseworlds title.
In an October 2025 interview with BobaTalks, DC Studios co-head James Gunn said he had discussed the sequel on and off and had spoken with Reeves about it. He added that he hadn’t read a script, even though Reeves had said a new draft existed.
Reeves has said the sequel would be set in the same world as the original and that Constantine would be tortured even more. MovieWeb notes that a Deadline report after Skydance’s acquisition of Warner Bros. said the sequel was still in development, but its status is now uncertain.
I can’t wait to share this wonderful movie so lovingly crafted by James Watkins in four short weeks. #ClayfaceMovie – only in theaters October 23. https://t.co/SPfo9nElnP

It’s not yet clear whether the new ‘Constantine’ will be part of Gunn’s DCU or exist separately. MovieWeb points out that ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is currently the only scheduled DCU film, alongside the Elseworlds titles ‘The Batman Part II’ and ‘Dynamic Duo’.
‘The Brave and the Bold’, a Wonder Woman reboot, and James Mangold’s ‘Swamp Thing’ are also in development. Following ‘Clayface’, the ‘Constantine’ project could signal a bigger push into horror and the supernatural for the studio.

For now, the new project looks like a fresh direction rather than a continuation of Reeves’ story. With a horror-focused writer on board, DC Studios appears to be leaning into the character’s darker roots.
Would you rather see a new Constantine movie or Keanu Reeves return for the sequel?
