DC’s ‘Clayface’ Box Office Tracking Gets a Major Boost as Pre-Sales Kick Off
DC Studios is taking a big swing this Halloween season. Instead of another tentpole superhero adventure, the third film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is ‘Clayface’, an R-rated body horror story built around one of Batman’s oldest and most tragic villains.
The film follows Matt Hagen, a Gotham street kid turned rising Hollywood star whose life falls apart when a local crime boss leaves him horribly disfigured. Desperate to reclaim his life, he turns to an experimental treatment that restores his face but slowly transforms him into a monstrous being made of living clay, sending him spiraling down a path of revenge.
Early box office signals are now arriving, and they’re encouraging. ‘Clayface’ is tracking for a domestic opening of more than $30 million following a solid start to ticket pre-sales. That’s a notable jump from earlier projections.
Boxoffice Pro’s first long-range forecast placed the film between $23 million and $33 million, while Box Office Theory had pointed to a more conservative $20 million to $26 million.
Not every tracker is quite as optimistic. One analysis shared from the Box Office Theory forums reported the film pacing well behind ‘Resident Evil’ at a major theater chain, which would translate to roughly a $20 million debut.

What makes these numbers so promising is the film’s modest price tag. ‘Clayface’ carries a reported $40 million production budget, which is small by superhero standards. At a $30 million-plus opening, the film would recoup the majority of its budget in a single weekend.
Weekday sales could add another 35% to 50% of the opening total, potentially pushing its first full week to between $34 million and $48 million. Using the common industry rule of thumb that films need roughly 2 to 2.5 times their budget to break even, ‘Clayface’ would need somewhere between $80 million and $100 million worldwide.
That’s a far more achievable target than the ones facing mega-budget blockbusters. The project comes from an impressive creative team. James Watkins, known for ‘Speak No Evil’ and ‘Eden Lake’, directs from a script originally conceived by ‘Doctor Sleep’ filmmaker Mike Flanagan, with ‘Drive’ co-writer Hossein Amini revising the final version.

Tom Rhys Harries stars as Matt Hagen, with Naomi Ackie as scientist Caitlyn Corr, alongside Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan and David Dencik. Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, Gunn and Safran serve as producers.
The film is set within the main DC Universe rather than Robert Pattinson’s ‘The Batman’ franchise. It’s also the earliest-set project in the DCU timeline so far, and the same version of Clayface appears in the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’.

DC is clearly hoping for a smoother ride than it had earlier this year. ‘Supergirl’ opened to $37.1 million in June but ultimately had a disappointing theatrical run against a far larger budget. A similar opening for ‘Clayface’ would be a very different story given its significantly lower costs. Even a moderate debut could set the film on a clear path to profitability.
Earlier tracking also revealed an interesting quirk. General awareness of the film sat at just 32%, but those who knew about it were planning to see it on opening weekend at nearly double the normal rate.

‘Clayface’ opens in North American theaters on October 23, with international markets starting on October 21. That puts it right in the Halloween corridor, a window that has historically rewarded horror titles.
It will face competition from ‘Wildwood’, which also opens October 23 and is tracking at $10 million to $15 million. With reviews still to come, the next 2 weeks could shift expectations even further.
Are you excited to see DC take a horror approach with ‘Clayface’?
