HBO Max is finally moving ahead with its Booster Gold series, and they’ve found the person to lead it. David Jenkins, the creator of Our Flag Means Death, has signed on to write the pilot episode. If the show gets picked up, he’s expected to take over as showrunner too.

This news comes not long after a big Emmy nomination day for The Penguin, another DC-related project. That show scored 24 nominations, including ones for Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti.

With that kind of momentum, Booster Gold could be the next big DC TV project for Warner Bros. Discovery.

The character Booster Gold was created by Dan Jurgens. His real name is Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, and he’s from Gotham City. He was a college football star who lost his scholarship after getting caught gambling. Later, he used futuristic technology to become a superhero, though he’s mostly known for chasing fame and fortune. According to the story, he even got his nickname from Ronald Reagan after saving the president.

James Gunn and Peter Safran, the heads of DC Studios, announced the show more than two years ago as part of their new DC Universe plans. At that time, they described Booster Gold as someone who “uses basic technology from the future to pretend to be a superhero in the present day.” Fans were excited, but things moved slowly.

There was a bit of a pause recently when reports came out that the project had lost its original showrunner. Some rumors even suggested that Kumail Nanjiani might play Booster, but Gunn and Safran said that wasn’t true, at least not for now.

Jenkins coming on board is a big deal, especially since he already has history with HBO. His show Our Flag Means Death was a pirate comedy starring Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby. It was cancelled after two seasons back in January 2024 and didn’t find a new home. After the cancellation, Jenkins said the show “came to a premature end,” but he also thanked HBO and its team, calling them “incredible champions of this show.”

Besides Our Flag Means Death, Jenkins also created the sci-fi comedy People of Earth for TBS.

The news was first reported by Deadline.
