DCU’s Future Gets More Diverse as James Gunn Teases The Arrival of DC’s First Black Female Superhero
The DC Universe is about to kick off its new live-action chapter with the release of Superman, and it’s happening in less than two weeks. After that, fans have a lot to look forward to, like Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns, the Supergirl movie, and several other projects that are still early in development.
Right now, a lot of people are talking about The Brave and the Bold, and many are asking when Wonder Woman will finally show up in the DCU. But during a recent interview, James Gunn dropped a small but exciting tease about something else, more diversity coming to the DCU.
While talking with the YouTube channel Pay or Wait, James Gunn and the Superman cast answered a few fan questions. One of them asked Gunn about Nubia, a powerful Black female hero from DC Comics. Gunn didn’t say too much, but he clearly hinted that something could be in the works.
“I am very aware of Nubia. And yes we are very much talking about that and I want to have all sorts of people represented in the DCU and yeah you might be very happy in the distant future.”
It wasn’t a full confirmation, but it’s the kind of tease that gets fans talking. Gunn made it clear that he cares about showing different kinds of characters and that there could be something for Nubia down the line, even if it’s not happening soon.
For those who don’t know, Nubia is a character from DC Comics who is sometimes known as Wonder Woman’s sister. She was created around the same time as Diana but raised apart from her.
Nubia is strong, skilled, and comes from the same Amazonian background. What makes her stand out is that she was one of the first Black female superheroes in mainstream comics. She means a lot to fans who haven’t always seen themselves represented in these stories.
There’s been some guessing about where she might appear, and one possibility people have brought up is Paradise Lost. That’s a new show coming to the DCU, set on the island of Themyscira before Wonder Woman is even born.
The show will focus on power struggles, drama, and conflict between the Amazons. Gunn and producer Peter Safran have compared the tone of the series to Game of Thrones. The name also reminds some fans of an old comic storyline from 2001 called Paradise Island Lost, which was about a civil war among the Amazons.
It would be cool to see Nubia in that series, but it might not make sense with the timeline. Since Wonder Woman won’t be in Paradise Lost, and Nubia is usually tied to Diana, it’s probably unlikely she’ll show up there either.
Still, Gunn’s comment is a good sign that Nubia might be on the way, even if fans have to wait a while. The idea of seeing a character like her in the DCU is exciting for a lot of people.
So, what do you think? Could Nubia finally get her moment on screen? Let us know in the comments below!
