‘Dead City’ Finale: Lauren Cohan Reveals the Surprising Reason Glenn Guided Maggie’s Choice To Spare Negan

Few relationships in ‘The Walking Dead‘ universe carry as much unresolved trauma as the one between Maggie and Negan, a bond permanently shaped by Negan murdering Maggie’s husband Glenn years earlier in the original series. That painful history has quietly hung over every season of ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City,’ even as circumstances have repeatedly forced the two into an uneasy alliance.

Season three spent its entire runtime building toward a moment that finally forced that tension into the open. With Mason Dillard emerging as the season’s central threat, Negan ultimately offered to turn himself over to Dillard to be killed, believing his sacrifice would protect Maggie, her son Hershel, and their fragile New York community.

Speaking exclusively about the moment, Cohan told PEOPLE that Glenn himself plays an unexpected role in Maggie’s decision, explaining that her late husband wouldn’t want her consumed by resentment toward Negan, especially given how visibly that anger has already damaged her relationship with their son Hershel.

Cohan framed the choice as less about forgiveness and more about basic emotional self-preservation. “It’s really difficult to stay angry at someone. The person you hurt most is yourself,” she told PEOPLE, describing Maggie’s arc across the season as a gradual, hard-won release of anger she’s been carrying long before ‘Dead City’ even began.

That release plays out directly in the finale’s central confrontation between the two characters. After turning down multiple chances to kill Negan throughout the season’s back half, Maggie finally tells him plainly that while she’ll never forgive him for what he did to Glenn, the two of them have reached somewhere new. “I’m not losing anybody else. I’ve lost enough,” she tells him, adding, “We are forever connected, Negan. We are outright chained to one another.”

She continues by directly addressing the wound that’s defined their entire relationship. “I’m never gonna forgive you — not ever — but we have moved past it and not further apart,” Maggie says, acknowledging that despite everything, Negan has become one of the closest people left in her life within this devastated version of the world.

That sense of permanent connection isn’t just emotional shorthand, either. Cohan has explained that within the world of ‘Dead City,’ Maggie genuinely doesn’t know whether other familiar faces like Rick, Daryl, Carol, or Eugene are even still alive, leaving Negan as one of the few constant, known presences left in her life, for better or worse.

For a relationship built on one of the franchise’s most devastating losses, watching Maggie finally choose release over vengeance marks a genuinely significant emotional payoff after years of buildup. Whether that fragile peace holds going forward remains to be seen, but for now, Glenn’s lingering influence over Maggie’s choices continues shaping the story in ways fans clearly weren’t expecting.
