Demi Lovato Shares How an Eating Disorder Made Her Skip Cake on Her Birthdays
Demi Lovato is speaking out about the profound personal growth she experienced while developing her first culinary project. During an appearance at the 92nd Street Y in New York on March 17, the 33-year-old singer highlighted a specific dessert that represents a major milestone in her health journey.
The upcoming book, titled One Plate at a Time: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food, includes a birthday cake recipe that Lovato considers particularly significant. She explained that for a long time, she avoided such celebrations entirely due to her complicated relationship with eating.
Reflecting on the inclusion of the sweet treat, Lovato noted the emotional weight it carries for her now. “There’s a time in my life where I wouldn’t celebrate my birthdays with cakes, and so to have a birthday cake recipe in my cookbook is so meaningful and has been so rewarding,” she told the audience.
The musician views the collection of recipes as a testament to her recovery process from an eating disorder. She recalled a period when even simple tasks like visiting a market were emotionally exhausting and often ended in distress.
“I used to step foot into a grocery store and break down into tears because I was so overwhelmed by all of the food,” Lovato admitted during the talk. She noted that her reality has shifted dramatically as she has gained confidence in managing her own nutrition.
Now, she finds empowerment in the very activities that once caused her fear. “And now I’m not only going into grocery stores and shopping myself, but I’m also cooking the meals that I’m making, and that’s a huge win for me,” she shared.
Scheduled for a March 31 launch, the book provides over 80 different dishes designed to be approachable and comforting. Some of the featured items include a quick spaghetti bolognese, chicken milanese served with a fresh arugula salad, and a simple pulled pork recipe.
Finding fulfillment in the process helped her move past the intimidation factor that often accompanies cooking. “When I actually stepped foot into the kitchen and had so much joy come from it, and I was proud of what I made,” she added regarding that breakthrough.
Lovato expressed a desire for her work to serve as a resource for others who struggle with similar anxieties. She intentionally designed the book to be a welcoming entry point for beginners or those in recovery.
“I wanted to create a cookbook that was for people who may have had disordered eating in the past or are just intimidated to step foot into the kitchen for the first time,” she remarked.
In addition to her debut as an author, Lovato remains a powerhouse in the entertainment industry with several major projects currently in motion. She recently released a documentary titled Child Star, which she co-directed, exploring the highs and lows of growing up in the spotlight.
In her personal life, Lovato is currently engaged to songwriter Jordan “Jutes” Lutes, whom she has often credited with providing a stable and supportive environment. The couple frequently shares glimpses of their life together, including their shared love for music and creative collaboration.
As the year progresses, Lovato continues to use her platform to advocate for mental health awareness and body positivity. Her transition into the lifestyle and wellness space through this cookbook marks a new era for the former Disney star.
With the release of her book just weeks away, the industry is watching closely to see how her vulnerable storytelling translates to the culinary world. This project seems to be more than just a list of ingredients; it is a map of her personal healing.
