Dennis Haskins, Iconic Mr. Belding From ‘Saved by the Bell,’ Dies at 75
For a generation of TV viewers, few sitcom authority figures were as lovable as Principal Richard Belding, and the news of Dennis Haskins’ death has hit fans of ‘Saved by the Bell’ hard. Long before he became a Saturday morning fixture, Haskins was a Chattanooga, Tennessee, native deeply involved in journalism, theater, campus entertainment, and community work as a student. Those roots eventually led him to one of the most enduring roles in teen television history.
His association with Mr. Belding actually predates ‘Saved by the Bell’ itself. Haskins first played the principal in the Disney Channel series ‘Good Morning, Miss Bliss’, opposite Hayley Mills. When that show was retooled for NBC, he was the only adult cast member who stayed on as characters like Zack Morris, Lisa Turtle, and Screech moved to Bayside High.
Now, the actor who brought that goofy, big-hearted principal to life has died at the age of 75. Pop Base shared the news on X, and the post quickly drew many fans. His agent, Jay Schachter, confirmed the death and remembered him warmly.
“It’s a tragic loss. Everyone loved Mr. Belding and those of us who got to know Dennis loved him even more,” Schachter told Deadline, adding that Haskins absolutely loved his fans and always had time for them. Haskins’ cause of death has not been disclosed.
Few actors have been as closely tied to a single character. Haskins played Principal Belding for 13 total seasons, stretching across ‘Good Morning, Miss Bliss’, ‘Saved by the Bell’ and the franchise’s follow-ups. He stayed with the original NBC series through its entire 4-season run from 1989 to 1993.
He didn’t stop there. Haskins reprised the role in ‘Saved by the Bell: The New Class’, which ran for 7 seasons from 1993 to 2000, and he also appeared in the franchise’s TV movies and the primetime spinoff ‘Saved by the Bell: The College Years’.
Fans got one more chance to see him in character years later. In 2015, Haskins reunited with co-stars Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, Elizabeth Berkley and Tiffani Thiessen for a sketch on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’. It marked the last time he played the famed principal.

His affection for the role never faded. In an earlier interview with Fox News, he explained that he embraced the character wholeheartedly, even making appearances at bars around the country where crowds would cheer when he delivered Belding’s famous “Hey, hey, hey” greeting.
Tributes have already begun pouring in. Dimples, a well-known Los Angeles karaoke bar he frequented over the years, paid tribute to him online shortly after the news broke, remembering him as someone who was deeply loved.
The sentiment echoes what those who knew him have described: a man who spent years singing, meeting strangers and posing for photos long after the show left primetime. On social media, one fan summed up the feelings of many, writing that Bayside High will never be the same.
For millions who grew up watching Zack, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Lisa, and Screech navigate high school, Mr. Belding was the constant presence at the center of it all. Haskins made the character endearing rather than stern, turning a sitcom principal into a pop culture icon.
His warmth on screen, and apparently off it, is what fans will remember most. Bayside’s halls may be quieter now, but his contribution to a beloved piece of television history is sure to live on.
