‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ Ending Explained, What The Final Twist Really Means For Red And Chloe
‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ has arrived on Disney Channel and Disney+, and the fifth installment of the franchise closes on a note that has become a signature of the series, a lingering suggestion that the story is not quite finished. The film premiered on Disney Channel on July 16, and its closing question this time comes from Chessy, the troublemaking daughter of the Cheshire Cat, voiced by Awkwafina. For a franchise built on cliffhangers, this one arrives wrapped in a new mystery involving a box and a jewel that fans are already picking apart online.
The movie centers on the Auradon Kingdom Cup Games, a major sporting event that brings royals from across the realms into Wonderland for competition. What unfolds beneath that competition is a much bigger reckoning for Red and Chloe, one tied directly to choices they made in the previous film, and it gives this ‘Descendants’ sequel more emotional weight than a simple monster of the week plot.
What Happens In The Descendants Wicked Wonderland Plot
The story picks up as the Kingdom Cup Games take place in Wonderland, forcing Red and Chloe to face the truth of the happy ending they thought they had secured. As the games unfold, the consequences of their choices in the previous film come back to affect everyone around them, all stemming from changes they made to the fabric of time. Red and Chloe return after altering the past only to realize their actions have unleashed a new set of consequences, and the diabolical Maddox Hatter is now free.
A new villain rises to threaten Wonderland’s power source, and if left unchecked, that power could be twisted into a weapon capable of conquering the world. Red and Chloe are pushed to team up despite their differences, because the stakes are too high for either of them to handle Wonderland’s unraveling alone. The threat comes from Maddox Hatter, played by Leonardo Nam, who captures the newly reformed Queen of Hearts, portrayed by Rita Ora.
To rescue her, Red and Chloe join forces with Red’s newly discovered sister Pink, love interest Luis Madrigal, and even Maddox’s own son Max, who has his own complicated feelings about his father’s villainy. Captain Hook’s daughter Hazel also joins the group, rounding out an unlikely team assembled to stop Maddox from taking control of Wonderland’s magic. The film revolves around a butterfly effect, with Red and Chloe having to integrate into a new timeline they unintentionally created, one filled with places and people that never existed before.
Inside The Auradon Kingdom Cup Games And Wonderland Setting
In this new timeline, Wonderland has joined Auradon, with the Rabbit Hole now fully open to everyone, and the storylines of the earlier films are slightly altered as a result, with some characters erased or replaced. Now that the Queen of Hearts is reformed and Cinderella is safe, things initially seem perfect for Red and Chloe, before Maddox Hatter emerges as a consequence of the changes they made. The ‘Kingdom Cup Games’ function as both a celebration of that new peace and the backdrop for its collapse.
The movie opens with Chessy recapping the events of the previous film, ‘The Rise of Red,’ setting up the stakes before the games begin. Filming took place primarily at The Bridge Studios in Vancouver, with production beginning in April 2025 and wrapping at the end of May that same year. Filming had actually begun in March 2025, concluding prior to July of that year in time for the Descendants/Zombies Worlds Collide Tour.
Brandy and Rita Ora returned to reprise their roles as Cinderella and the Queen of Hearts, alongside Paolo Montalban as King Charming and Melanie Paxson as Fairy Godmother, with Paxson becoming the only actor to appear in all five ‘Descendants’ films. That returning cast gives the Kingdom Cup Games sequences a sense of continuity even as the timeline around them has visibly shifted.
Descendants Wicked Wonderland Ending And The Mysterious Box
The film’s closing line, “You didn’t think that was the end of the story, did you,” has become something of a tradition across the franchise, and this installment is no exception. The film’s final moments echo that phrase once again, suggesting this is not truly the end of the story for Red, Chloe, and their new allies. The twist this time is built around a box and a jewel whose contents are left deliberately unclear.
How did you feel about the movie's ending?
Executive producer Suzanne Todd addressed the ambiguity directly with TVLine, explaining that the team loves the world of magical objects and had made specific decisions about that last scene, shooting it a number of different ways before settling on the version audiences saw. Todd added that they had specific ideas about trajectories they might want to jump off from, and she encourages fans to keep their theories coming because she enjoys seeing what viewers hope to see in future installments.
Even the cast seems genuinely unsure of what comes next. Kiara Romero, who plays Hazel, told TVLine the cast talked about the ending constantly on set but admitted they still do not actually know what is inside the box, while Liamani Segura added that fans never quite know what to expect from Pink. Kylie Cantrall joked that she hopes it is not another pocket watch, since the cast is ready to be done with that particular object, and Malia Baker added that they would need an actual mallet on set to destroy it if it reappeared.
What Comes Next For The Descendants Franchise
Cantrall, who plays Red, spoke about her character’s complicated journey navigating her relationship with her new sister Pink while her longtime friendship with Chloe takes something of a backseat this time around. She noted that Pink breaks her walls down throughout the film and brings out a more vulnerable side of Red that audiences have not seen before. That shift in focus is part of what critics have pointed to as a strength of this installment.
One review noted that after rewriting the past and saving Cinderella, Red and Chloe appear to have secured a happy ending, only for the film to reveal that their actions created an entirely new threat in Maddox Hatter. A separate review called it arguably one of the franchise’s best installments yet, citing its fast paced action, satisfying character moments, and consistently strong soundtrack.
As for whether a sixth film would remain in Wonderland, Segura indicated she does not think so, suggesting the series is likely to branch out into new territory going forward. With the mystery of that closing box still unresolved and the cast themselves professing not to know the answer, fans are left to speculate about what Red and Pink might be hiding, and it is worth asking readers directly what they believe is sealed inside that box and where they think ‘Descendants’ should take Red and Chloe next.
