‘Dexter’ Turns 20 With a Bloody Birthday Poster That Only Dexter Could Pull Off

It has been 20 years since Dexter Morgan first appeared on television, and Paramount+ is celebrating the milestone in the most ‘Dexter’ way possible. Instead of going with a simple anniversary logo or a normal birthday message, the streamer has created a poster that mixes something sweet with something seriously disturbing.

The new artwork puts Michael C. Hall’s Dexter front and center as he appears to be celebrating his birthday. He sits at a table with his head resting on one hand, looking almost like a kid waiting for someone to bring out a birthday cake. There is just one very important difference. His “cake” is actually a huge donut covered in red marmalade.

The donut is a clear nod to one of Dexter’s most recognizable habits throughout the series. Two candles shaped like the numbers 2 and 0 sit on top, making the reason for the celebration obvious. Dexter isn’t turning 20, of course. The poster is marking two decades since the character first arrived on screens.

But the donut is not even the darkest part of the image.

Look underneath it and there is a bloody blood slide being used as the plate. Longtime fans will immediately recognize the reference. Blood slides have been one of the most important visual details in Dexter’s world, representing the trophies he kept from his victims. Turning one into a stand for a birthday donut is exactly the kind of twisted joke that fits the series.

The setting makes the whole thing even better. Dexter is sitting inside what looks like one of his classic kill rooms, with plastic sheeting covering the background. The table also looks like the kind of table fans have seen during some of the show’s most memorable scenes. Dexter wears a version of his familiar work clothes along with an apron, making him look like someone preparing a birthday treat in the middle of a murder scene.

Paramount+ Argentina was the first account to share the anniversary artwork, giving fans an early look at the celebration. According to DexterDaily, this poster is only the beginning of the franchise’s 20th-anniversary plans, with more content expected as October 1 gets closer.

That date is especially important because October 1, 2006, was when ‘Dexter’ first premiered and Michael C. Hall introduced audiences to the complicated serial killer hiding behind the life of a Miami police blood-spatter analyst. What started as a dark crime drama eventually became one of television’s biggest franchises.

The story has also continued long after the original series ended. Dexter returned in ‘Dexter: New Blood,’ and the franchise has moved forward again with ‘Dexter: Resurrection.’ Season 2 of that series is now part of the current promotional push, giving Paramount+ another reason to keep the character in the spotlight.

The anniversary also arrives at an interesting time for the franchise. Rather than simply looking back at the original show, Paramount+ is using the milestone to remind viewers that Dexter’s story is still very much alive. The combination of new episodes and anniversary material gives longtime fans something to revisit while newer viewers have another reason to discover the character.

What makes the new poster work so well is that it does not need to explain the joke. A donut, a blood slide, a kill room and Dexter himself are enough. It takes something as harmless as a birthday celebration and turns it into something only a ‘Dexter’ fan could find funny.

After 20 years, Dexter Morgan clearly isn’t ready to leave the spotlight. And judging by this poster, his birthday party is going to be anything but normal.

What would you most like to see from the ‘Dexter’ 20th-anniversary celebration?
