Diane Kruger has been a major name in fashion and film for over two decades, and her career began in an impressive way. At just 15, she entered the Elite Model Look national competition in 1992 in Hamburg and won first prize, including the Look of the Year Modeling Award. The win gave her a contract with Elite Model Management and even a Vespa as part of the prize.

That same year, she represented Germany at the international competition in New York, hosted by Donald Trump, which helped launch her professional modeling career. Kruger moved to Paris alone at 15 and signed with Elite, quickly building a portfolio that included campaigns for top designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Giorgio Armani, and Christian Dior. She also walked for Marc Jacobs, D&G, and Sonia Rykiel, and graced the covers of Vogue Paris, Marie Claire, and Cosmopolitan.

During this time, she lived near the Tuileries in Paris and became close friends with fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld after meeting him on a photo shoot for Elle magazine

Despite her success in modeling, Kruger was drawn to acting. At 17, she auditioned for Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, though she didn’t get the part. Besson suggested she enroll at Cours Florent drama school in Paris, where she studied for two years.

She also took theater lessons encouraged by French actor Guillaume Canet, who wanted her to test her skills as an actress. “Being an actress was the next apparent step, allowing her to do more concrete and tangible work than modeling while continuing to travel,” sources noted.

Kruger made her acting debut in 2002 in the TV film The Piano Player, starring Dennis Hopper and Christopher Lambert. She then appeared in Mon Idole, her then-husband’s directorial debut, and films such as Michel Vaillant (2003) and Wicker Park (2004). But it was her role as Helen of Sparta in Wolfgang Petersen’s epic Troy in 2004 that truly catapulted her career.

The film, starring Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, introduced Kruger to a global audience and established her as a leading lady in Hollywood. Troy’s success opened doors to major films like National Treasure (2004), Joyeux Noël (2005), and Copying Beethoven (2006). According to critics, the exposure from Troy gave her a strong international profile and allowed her to transition from modeling into serious acting.

Kruger’s career continued to grow with roles in Inglourious Basterds (2009), The Host (2013), and the TV series The Bridge. She has received praise for her performances in In the Fade (2017) and The Operative (2019). Beyond acting, she has worked as a jury member and president at international film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and Angoulême. She has also represented global brands like L’Oréal and Calvin Klein.

On a personal level, Kruger is trilingual and balances her life between New York and Atlanta. She has a daughter with actor Norman Reedus and remains close to her modeling roots and friendships, including the late Karl Lagerfeld.

Troy marked a turning point in Kruger’s career. It transformed her from a model into an internationally recognized actress, giving her credibility and access to major roles in Hollywood. The film remains a defining moment, proving her ability to handle big-budget productions and historical epics.

Diane Kruger’s journey from modeling to becoming a respected actress is inspiring. Her role in Troy clearly set the stage for her long-lasting career. What do you think was her most iconic role, and how do you feel Troy shaped her path? Share your thoughts in the comments.
