Paul Thomas Anderson has returned with a new film, and it is already shaking up the industry. His action thriller One Battle After Another had its world premiere in Los Angeles on September 8, and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. The movie is set for release in the United States on September 26, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film brings together an impressive cast. Leonardo DiCaprio leads, joined by Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and Teyana Taylor. The movie also introduces Chase Infiniti, making her first big screen appearance.

Anderson not only directed but also wrote and produced the project, which is loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland.

Critics are calling the movie a bold and fearless work. They say Anderson doesn’t hold back in his approach and delivers a film that is both thrilling and provocative. Many highlight Sean Penn’s role as one of the strongest of his career, describing his character as a chilling villain.

On Rotten Tomatoes, One Battle After Another currently holds a 98% critics score from 54 reviews. Reviewers describe the film as fast, intense, and relentless, with action that overshadows most other blockbusters released this year. Some even go as far as to call it a masterpiece that demands to be experienced on the biggest screen possible.

Anderson is being praised for creating a movie that not only excites with nonstop action but also digs deep into bigger ideas about human behavior and power. As one review summed up, “One Battle After Another is cinema at its purest—uncompromising, exhilarating, and alive.”

One Battle pivots on an all-time sinister big screen villain. Penn is indeed a personification of white American hegemony and hypocrisy in one of the best turns of his career.

David Crow

Anderson’s film is daring, deliberately provocative and quite nihilistic. He’s unafraid to point fingers. But he’s not just interested in condemning our reigning leaders and institutions. He’s also keenly diving into the psychology of human nature…

Frank J. Avella

One Battle After Another is an adrenaline rush that makes the year’s other blockbusters seem pathetically lacking in comparison. Paul Thomas Anderson lobs a cinematic grenade in an unrelenting action-thriller. It is a must-see in IMAX.

Julian Roman

One Battle After Another is cinema at its purest—uncompromising, exhilarating, and alive. Here Paul Thomas Anderson has given us a masterpiece that doesn’t just entertain but rattles the bones.

Linda Marric

One might compare such an experience to that of riding a rollercoaster. In this case, the word “masterpiece” works just as well.

Will Bjarnar

This feels like a major moment for Anderson, who has taken a big swing outside of his usual style and seems to have knocked it out of the park.

Pairing DiCaprio with a strong supporting cast and giving Penn such a powerful role makes this film one to watch. I think this could end up being one of the defining films of the year.
