‘Ransom Canyon’ spent much of its first season building suspicion around one question, and it centered on Reid Collins. Fans of the Netflix western drama watched Randall Kirkland’s death cast a shadow over the town, with clues repeatedly pointing toward Reid as the person responsible.

Reid eventually revealed that he and his friend Tim, played by Niko Guardado, were not driving the truck when it struck Randall. Instead, the two had been tasked with disposing of the vehicle by Lucas’s brother Kit, a favor Reid and Tim owed him after Kit had helped them out of a difficult situation earlier.

That favor traced back to Kit having sold Reid drugs, which gave Kit the leverage to call in the request without Reid asking many questions. Reid’s role, then, was never about the crash itself but about the cover up that followed it, a distinction the season took its time unpacking.

Once Reid pointed investigators toward Kit, police arrested him, and Kit appeared ready to take the fall for the crime. Sheriff Brigman, however, quickly realized something did not add up, since Kit did not actually know the proper details of how Randall died despite his willingness to accept the blame.

Kit’s silence made more sense once it became clear he had been with Sheriff Brigman’s wife, Margaret, on the night of the accident, and it was Kit whom she called for help disposing of the car. Margaret and Kit had been carrying on an affair, one made even more tangled by the fact that Kit’s brother Lucas was dating the Sheriff’s daughter, Lauren.

Sheriff Brigman’s Investigation Reaches a Painful Conclusion

The season’s central mystery ultimately traced back to Margaret, an alcoholic who was behind the wheel of the car and likely drunk at the time of the crash. She called Kit immediately after hitting Randall, and because the two were in love, he chose to protect her rather than let the truth come out.

Sheriff Brigman was left with a wrenching decision once he pieced together his wife’s involvement, knowing what he had to do even as it devastated him personally. Part of what made the choice so difficult was that Margaret had gotten sober and was rebuilding her life outside of Ransom at the time the truth surfaced.

The Sheriff’s own daughter, Lauren, played a role in pushing him toward doing the right thing after she overheard the truth for herself. In the end, Brigman went through with the arrest, closing out the season’s central whodunit with his own family at the center of the fallout.

Kit, for his part, ends up back with his brother but at the cost of his freedom, since his loyalty to Margaret is what led him to take the blame in the first place. The reveal reframes several relationships across the show, particularly given how entangled Margaret’s affair was with people close to her own daughter.

What the Reveal Means for Reid and the Rest of the Cast
