Did Sheriff Kerry Kill Hal Jordan in ‘Lanterns’? What the Clues Say Ahead of the Finale

The question of whether Kerry killed Hal Jordan has become one of the most talked about threads in ‘Lanterns’ as the series approaches its closing episode. The HBO show killed off Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, in the present timeline during its pilot, and fans still have no clear answer about who did it. Kerry, the local sheriff played by Kelly Macdonald, sits closer to the case than anyone.

The season finale is set to air on Sunday, October 4, at 9:00 p.m. Before it does, the evidence around Kerry deserves a careful look, because the show has given viewers reasons to trust her and reasons to doubt her.

Did Kerry Kill Hal Jordan, According to the Halogram

After the pair returned to John’s truck in the latest episode, the Halogram became convinced that Kerry was the one who killed him. That suspicion arrives right after a scene where Kerry’s face turns ashen when she hears Hal’s voice coming from the construct.

The accusation carries limits, since the Halogram is a projection of Hal and not a neutral witness. The same construct also told John that perhaps he was the one who killed Hal, and John muttered that he only wished he had. The Halogram appears willing to suspect everyone, which makes its read on Kerry hard to treat as proof.

One Italian analysis argues that Kerry could be involved in Hal’s death without being the person who killed him. That distinction matters, because it leaves room for a cover-up or a concealed truth rather than a straightforward murder.

Sheriff Kerry and Her History With Hal

John gets a call from Sheriff Kerry Kane with the news that Hal is dead, and she admits that nearly everyone in Rushville hated Hal, so she called the one person she thought might care. That is a human reaction, but it also places her at the center of the investigation from the start.

The relationship between the two runs deeper than a sheriff and a troublemaker. Kerry is now divorced, and she reveals that she and Hal eventually began a relationship. She also says Hal wrote her letters for a long time after the Rushville incident.

Her grief appears genuine on screen. She plays John a saved voicemail from Hal in which he wonders aloud what pet name he should use for her. Still, a mystery built in the mold of a crime drama rarely clears the person closest to the victim.

Other Suspects in the Death of Hal Jordan

Kerry is far from the only name in play. An earlier episode suggested that John Stewart may be responsible for Hal’s death, since the show laid out plenty of reasons for him to resent the Green Lantern. John also broke Hal’s nose, and Kerry had theorized that whoever did that probably killed him.

Kerry later learns that John punched Hal before his death and wants to know why he never told her. That tension keeps the two investigators from fully trusting each other, even as they work the case together.

There is also a theory that points away from every other character. At the end of the penultimate episode, the Halogram revealed that Hal’s grandfather had killed himself, which led both John and the construct to consider the possibility that Hal did the same. Under that reading, Kerry might have hidden the truth afterward and made the death look like a murder.

What the ‘Lanterns’ Finale Could Settle

The original image of the crime remains stark. Kerry and John find Hal half covered in snow, with a bullet in his head and no ring on his finger. The missing ring is still one of the strongest clues, because it points to someone who understood what the ring was worth.

The show’s creative approach helps explain why the answer has stayed hidden for so long. Co-creator Damon Lindelof said the decision to kill Hal in the first episode was driven by a desire to subvert expectations. The series was already understood to be a crime show inspired by ‘True Detective,’ which made removing a lead character early a bold choice.

Fans will probably need to wait for the finale to confirm which theory holds. If Kerry did pull the trigger, her warmth toward John and her grief at the funeral would need to be read in an entirely new light, so do you think her kindness has been sincere all along or carefully performed?
