John Goodman has had a long career, with roles in ‘Roseanne’, ‘The Flintstones’, ‘The Big Lebowski’ and HBO’s ‘The Righteous Gemstones’. The 74-year-old actor has also spoken openly for years about his health and his relationship with his weight.

He has lost about 200 pounds, according to The Sunday Times. In earlier interviews, he described cycles of losing a lot of weight over a summer and then gaining it all back, before he changed his approach about a decade ago.

Goodman got personal about the change in a new interview. Speaking on the November 2 episode of Josh Horowitz’s podcast “Happy Sad Confused,” he said he is still trying to get used to his face.

He described the experience as strange but also fun to get used to. Entertainment Weekly highlighted the comment, which quickly spread among fans. Goodman added that while he still thinks of himself as a bigger man, he enjoys being able to buy clothes off the rack. It’s a small change, but one he clearly appreciates.

The actor also shared a behind-the-scenes story from ‘The Righteous Gemstones’. He played televangelist Dr. Eli Gemstone across 4 seasons of the HBO comedy, which ran from 2019 to 2025.

Goodman said he turned down a nude scene on the show because he wasn’t sure how his body would look on camera after losing so much weight. According to reports, the crew eventually found another way to make the scene work.

Goodman also reflected on how his weight may have affected his work. He said he weighed about 225 pounds when he moved to New York and wondered whether his later weight gain had sabotaged his career.

On public comments about his appearance, he said that kind of attention is fair game up to a point in his line of work. He added that he simply ignores it. The actor has talked about his health before. In a 2016 interview with ABC, he described losing 60 to 70 pounds over a few months and then falling back into old habits.

He explained that he eventually chose a slower approach based on movement and exercise, partly because he needed energy for work. The change has stuck for years, and Goodman has stayed committed to a healthier lifestyle for more than a decade.

The podcast interview came during a difficult stretch for one of Goodman’s latest films. He co-stars in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ‘Digger’ as the President of the United States, alongside Tom Cruise.

The film struggled at the box office after mixed reviews, and Goodman said on the same podcast that the negative early buzz hurt and damaged the film before it even opened. He also said he remains proud of the project and had a great time making it.

Goodman’s honesty has drawn a warm response online. Many fans appreciated how openly he discussed both the physical and emotional sides of such a major change. His comments also show that a big transformation can take time to feel natural, even years later. For Goodman, adjusting to his reflection seems to be part of the journey he is still enjoying.
