Cruise didn’t shy away from the question, initially framing his life as one built around embracing uncertainty. “I like standing on the edge of a cliff physically and metaphorically, meaning I look at life as an adventure and I always have,” he said, before Baron pressed him for a more direct answer, according to the interview shared via GQ’s YouTube channel.

“So do I fear death? No, I don’t. But I don’t mind. It’s not like I’m not afraid. I don’t mind the feeling,” Cruise continued, explaining that he sees life as a balance between certainties and uncertainties, and that part of his approach to both filmmaking and living involves deliberately creating new uncertainties to keep moving forward. He later summarized the philosophy simply: “It’s just who I am… I’m not afraid to feel afraid… I’m not afraid to go, okay, I know this is a leap and let’s take the jump. Let’s go.”

The interview also confirmed a long-circulated story about Cruise’s intensity as a mentor. His ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ co-star Glen Powell had previously revealed that Cruise once had him sit alone in a theater and watch a six-hour instructional video Cruise created himself, walking through lessons from his career.

Cruise confirmed the story was true, explaining the video covered fundamentals like understanding lenses, framing, and the layers of visual storytelling. When asked what he tells people before they work with him, Cruise offered a phrase that’s apparently become something of a personal catchphrase: “I’m upfront about it. It’s like, the rumors are true and do you want this?” When Baron asked if he genuinely says that line to people, Cruise confirmed, “Yes. If we’re there, I’m like, trust me, the rumors are true. I’ll be here before you.”

Cruise also embraced the reputation head-on when discussing his well-known intensity, recalling being teased about it even as a kid. “I am intense. I got a very good sense of humor about it,” he said, tying that intensity to his drive to fully understand whatever he’s working on, whether that’s a skill, a story, or the people around him.
