The classic horror slasher franchise Scream returns in January next year with the fifth installment of the franchise. Simply titled Scream, just like the original 1996 movie, the fifth movie seems like it’s gonna be both a sequel to Scream 4 and a reboot that could start a new era of the franchise.

Although David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and Roger L. Jackson are returning to reprise their roles, there’s a possibility that new characters could lead the franchise into a new era. Co-director Tyler Gillett recently teased that franchise could continue with the new cast of characters:

This new cast of characters is so wonderful. The legacy cast, they’re so wonderful. I think what we discovered, and what [screenwriters] Guy [Busick] and James [Vanderbilt] did, is they found a real reason for the next story to exist. We know that there is more gas in the tank. There are more stories to be told in Woodsboro, and about these characters, for sure.

Of course, we’ll not get ahead of ourselves, we still need to wait for what will the next movie deliver. Who knows how many Ghostfaces they can make in this franchise with every new movie, it could go forever.

Co-directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the new Scream is starring Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Neve Campbell. The movie is set to be released on January 14, 2022 by Paramount Pictures.

Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.
